My 99 Expedition is having gem induced problems, I was wondering if anyone knows if I can replace it with one from an F-150, or an Explorer. Would this get rid of the A4WD and leave me with only 2h 4h and 4L, if so Im ok with that. Never really liked the Auto anyway. Thanks for reading and any help you can advice you can offer.
No, installing the switch will cut power to the front clutch and to the shift motor, but once you turn the switch on and the shift motor powers up, you'll be right back to where you are now.
Are you sure the problem isn't with the selector switch on the dash telling the GEM to go to 4L?
The way I understand it will go into 4L at 5mph or less and in neutral. But mine tried while pulling a friends camper at 40mph. Once I got it pulled over the grinding stopped and it locked into 4L. The 4X4 light on the dash was flashing but the switch was still in the A4WD position. It would not come out of low range until I restarted it but then it was still in 4H. I disconnected the shift motor and it went back to 2wd, even the hubs unlocked.
I assume there are auto locking hubs, I don't know a whole lot about the 4wd system. All I know is after I disconnected the shift mot.or I heard something disengage and it is no longer in 4wd and does not bind up in tight corners
