I have a 1984 Ford F-150 with a newly rebuilt 302 bored 30 over. Now I currently have an old 4 barrel Holley 600 cfm carburetor running on it while I decide which carburetor I should buy. A friend of mine keeps recommending the Holley Street Avenger. He said you will know where that extra money went. Now I am wondering if anyone out there can relay some helpful information regarding this carburetor issue. I was going to buy a Holley 4160 750 cfm but I know there are some real experts out there that can guide a lot better along with some feedback on carburetors you may recommend. Thanks and I appreciate any information you can provide.
You don't want to over-carb the engine. You would probably be best off with about 600cfm. My 300-6 will turn 5k all day on 350cfm, so you may even be able to get away with a 500, like an Edelbrock.
According to my CFM calculator you'd be happy with a 500. It goes like this: cubic inches X rpm - 302 x 5500 =1661000. You divide the result by /3456 to determine your correct cfm for the carb: 1661000 / 3456 = 480.6134 carb CFM. You won't like a 750, it'll bog and backfire until you hit 3000 rpm and you'll get lousy mileage and fouled plugs. Get the 500 cfm Performer. If you don't like the Performer, Holley sells a 390 cfm 4 barrel, and unless your engine is running better than 80% volumetric efficiency, that would work as well.
A 600 Edelbrock or Holley will work just fine. I like the Edelbrock better myself. Ford used the 600 on the 83-85 5.0HO motors with no problems. I have run one on a 224,000 mile 302 in my old truck and it runs great.
