i just did a generic search on good ole ebay to see what options were there and this popped up. says it fits chev from 73 to like 80 something. i figure its just a return and should never really have any pressure on it so shouldnt matter.

FWIW you should be able to jump a wire from the FTSV to the "return valve" so that it is fully automatic. IIRC those valves default to one tank, and when under power switch to the other.
So i finally got started on tearing the motor out this last weekend, was a rough weekend to say the least. here are some pics cause a picture is worth a thousand words.
was working by myself so had to improvise for some stuff.. hood removal.. lol
prepping the motor for removal:
missed a few things but got it removed, IP removed, Intake removed and was getting ready to pull the heads here:
ill stop this post here and start another one of head removal and discovery....
got the heads off and starting cleaning and found this...
so after finding this i said eff it ill use my spare 140k 7.3 i had laying around for a spare... so i started buzzing the parts off it checking it out.. got the first head off and found this....
so once i found this the thought of rebuilding pushing me to thinking of parting out the idi and crossing to the dark side... after much debate i figured hell ill pop the pistons out and see the spec on the cylinders...
so, after quite a bit of debate and looking at the ridge in the top of the cylinder and seeing how much taper is more than likely in the cylinders that kicked the idea of just using some good stock pistons and doing a hillbilly rebuild on it (bearings, rings, and a quick hone).
So out of the kindness of my dads heart he decided to offer me his 6.9l less than 40k mile motor for a very fair price. so in leu of that ill be going 6.9 now. i posted my head studs in the classifieds and gonna buy some 6.9 studs and new head gaskets...
Yes i do. He is the best. He also has a badass IDI. lol
his old motor he sold me was used hard for its life, towing a 32' 5th wheel and almost all those miles are towing. The back 4 cylinders were sleeved due to cavitation so the back is all sleeved..
only one quirk, ever since the motor was rebuilt it used some oil. he thinks they did a ****ty job on the valve guides. first 800 miles it will use 1 quart of oil. than every 500 after that it uses 1 quart. but i can deal with that for a pretty fresh motor.
Rob
His motor is a 6.9 bored .020 over, coated pistons, fully balanced low end, 3 angle valve job done by a race shop on heads, comp valve springs, R&D stage 1 cam, R&D 90cc pump, R&D sticks, BW S256 turbo, Hypermax intercooler, plenty of custom piping, pushing 24psi....
and thats just the motor...
Yes originally it was, the rebuild place warrantied it if i remember right and sleeved the back 4 cylinders. the front 4 were in good shape. Dad had always got the coolant additive at ford and changed the oil ever 2000-3000 miles. never over.
