I bought this truck intended for a winter commute beater. I knew it had some problems but I couldn't pass it up as it has less than 9,000 miles on the freshly installed remanufactured engine.

Anyhow, the o/d doesn't work. The o/d light will come on when pushing the plunger at the end of the control. I get no o/d flashing signals. But the damn thing wraps out @ 3500 rpms on the highway @ 65mph.
Anything specific to look for in trying to figure this out?
Just to clarify, when the O/D light is activated using the button on the end of the column gearshift, this means the O/D is deactivated. So, Light On, O/D Off
LOOF for short.
Things that prevent OD: 1)broken planetary gearset 2) broken band 3)band strut dropped 4)servo stuck/broken or unsealed 5)valve body/solenoid 6)BOBO switch 7)speed sensor. Off the top of my head.

Sounds like Shift Solenoid 3 (SS3), its electrical connector, contacts & wiring, belongs on your suspect list. Consider having a trusted tranny shop scan the tranny computer for trouble codes, as they can offer up good trouble shooting clues & post All trouble code numbers found.
Is the OD light lit, or flashing, if so, trouble codes are set in the tranny computer. EDIT: Have a look through the 5R55E tranny link Rockledge posted above.
Tranny Codes won't be in the engine computer, they'll be in the tranny computer & you'll need a high end scantool to extract them, a parts store code reader, or scantool won't likely be able to pull all tranny codes. Is the blue OD light flashing???
If it has cruise control, does it work?
Can you feel the torque converter lockup in 3rd gear?
Can you see the rpm increase if you tap on the brake pedal enough to turn on the brake lights, not enough to apply the brakes?
Is the fluid level correct? Does it have a bad odor? Have you looked at all the linkage on the side of the transmission? If it has a 'kickdown' cable or lever is it installed correctly?
You did not even give the clue that the unit had been repaired, much less recently. Try to provide more information.
Cruise control does indeed work
Can't really feel it lock up, but it certainly doesn't shift into o/d when I let off the pedal @ 70mph
Can't see the rpm increase with a slight tap of the brake
Fluids are good...no smell and just slightly low.
I have never checked the linkage, I am too afraid of not knowing what I am looking at.
I apologize for not saying it has been rebuilt 2x's, got in a hurry when posting.
It was rebuilt originally @ 103,000 miles, and again (for the no O/D issue) @ 152,000 (April of 2012). It now has 163,000 miles
