Thanks for all of the advice. I also have a ruger no.1 .270 and it seems to kick twice as much as the BAR safari .300 win mag.
Anyway, my plan is to hook up with anyone that wants to go and I would perfer a flyin caribou hunt which I think would be very successful vs. driving down the highway....also plan on fishing.
For a side arm would a desert eagle .44 mag be ok. I mean I would not expect to take down a bear with it but it would certainly make him think twice about charging right up to me and take a bite.
The 44 mag would be a great side arm. Try and use a bullit that doesn't mushroom too fast so it has a chance of reaching a vital organ. One other thing about bears. the worst bear predicament to stumble into is when you get between a sow and her cub(s). It can happen accidentally and she WILL get you.
On the lighter side here is a short bear story; Two guys are out in the woods camping when a brown bear comes into camp and starts rummaging around. The first guy starts putting on his running shoes and the other guy says"why are you putting on your running shoes? You can't out run that bear". To which the first guy replies " I don't have to out run the bear, I just have to out run you".
So just make sure and take someone along that you can outrun.
