MRSVEGAN,
I personally just finished changing my GP's only because of the mileage on the truck and I plug my block heater in virtually year round.....I know it may not be necessary, but then you are not using the GP's to heat things up. Mine were virtually new looking with no ohm issues.
did you have to suck oil out of your cylinders when you changed your glow plugs? im thinking about changin mine, but ive never changed them under the covers before, just on the old idi 6.9 thats external of the cover.
The heater element actually plugs into the oil cooler housing. The rear part where the oil filter threads on. The cord runs from there to the front bumper. It may be stuffed down in the area where your trans cooler sits. They fall down in there from time to time.
Yes... the housing that the oil cooler and oil filter attaches to. I can see the 110V cord behind the driver-side front tire... along the frame. Follow that to the front.

Maybe a good mechanic for another diesel... not the 7.3L.

Autolites, to be specific. Do not buy Autolite glow plugs... don't even get glow plugs from ebay in the off chance that somebody cleaned their accidentally-purchased Autolites and marked them as another brand. I'm only half-kidding on that last part, I've seen stranger things... but just be absolutely certain. They swell, they can't be removed from the top, so you have to pop a head that weighs more than most wives to dig them out (dig the glowplugs out, not the wife).

There is oil and coolant in the oil cooler, and yes... the heating element passes into the coolant. I have replaced my core heater, replaced cups, and swapped to ELC... so I've pulled that heater no less than three times, and it ain't oil that splashes all over me.

A lot of oil AND fuel get into the cylinder when you pull the injectors, but a little bit of oil will drip down from the top when you remove the glow plugs. It's best to crank-clear it to be certain before installing the glow plugs. For glow plugs, you need a 10mm deep socket to loosen the glow plug. You won't get them out with a socket. I have a piece of 5/16" plastic semi-rigid fuel line that I use for spinning the glow plugs out.
Jason, you are probably correct and I too have that GP LED light wired in - it is really nice to have a visual of when the GP's are energized and when they go off.
