changing out the bulbs on my park lights as they seem a bit dim & I don't know how old they are, I put the new bulb in and it's flopping around in the socket like you wouldn't believe and won't work unless I hold it in position!! decided I couldn't have that so put the old bulb back in & damn me if that now doesn't fit properly either!! any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Front sockets? The spring in the back that holds the contact plate is likely broke/stuck and that is why you have to hold the bulb. You pushed the old bulb IN to release it, the spring stuck and now won't push out to hold the new bulb.
Try some WD40 or such and see if the contact plate will move. With the power off, push the plate down with a screwdriver and see if it moves. They typically rust and not work right.
The small lugs are vertically offset (different planes on the base) but it is possible to install bulbs 180° out. Ensure that the lugs are in their correct corresponding groove.
WD-40 to loosen & lubricate the socket but use dielectric grease to dissuay the elements from the contacts.
Freightrain hit it on the head, stuck spring, unfortunately when I pushed with a screw driver the pad with the spring popped straight out the back!!! the back of the holder has rusted away so when the truck goes in for the rear axle flip & Jag IFS I'll have to repair it, got it wedged in place with a piece of cork and gaffer tape and it works for now... will keep you posted..
