are you talking engine stand or crane/cherry picker? I can get my engine out OK with a chain hoist on an overhead beam - I just don't have a stand for working on it/moving it around and am looking to purchase one.
I wouldn't put it on a stand rated for 1000. The one you have linked is the one you want. I have one and they are a great stand. I don't know what the ebay ones are for quality, but they are quite a bit cheaper and rated to 2000. Look the same. May want to check them out.
thanks Darin - i'll shop around a bit, but $200 is cheap insurance against dropping my engine on the ground - especially after I put some of the goodies on it that i'm planning :-)
I literally JUST tried putting my motor on a 1000lbs rated one about 20 minutes ago....it was a no go!!! Bent so much i just didnt feel safe putting it on it. Problem is i need it off the hoist within a day or two and cant wait to order one, so ill be making some runs to the parts stores tomorrow. 2000LBS one is a MUST
The 2000# Harbor Freight stand works fine for the 7.3, just have to grease the pivot so it turns easier. Also the bar is just rolled sheet metal so I bought a 3' prybar for $10 that fits the hole where the bar goes while I was there to pick up the stand. It comes with no bolts to mount an engine so you have to go to the hardware store to get bolts to suit your engine. The stand also folds up for storage.

Good luck bud! Glad you got the 2000 lb. one. I bought a 2000 lb. from Autozone, and it's had a 7.3 on it for a year now. It bounces a little, but not bad enough to make me uneasy. I wouldn't put one anything less. I bought another engine a while back and built a cradle for it. It's pretty solid.
Thanks bill. I guess we'll see how sturdy it is. I'm also not completely sure my barn beam and bracket can support the engine, so I'll be testing that as well!
How does the cradle work? Is it a pain to work on the bottom end?
I just built it to hold an engine. The engine mounts and two points on the back of the block and the the motor mounts. I built it so I could put an engine on it with a starter mounted so if you want ed to do a compression test on one before tear down or whatever, you can power the starter and spin the engine with it.

Hope everything works ok for ya JP. You could put a couple supports up to the beam from the floor to help support the beam if there is a question. Back when we used to have to work out of a single car garage that's what i did to pull car motors. I just had a bottom chord of a rafter doubled up, chain around it, and a 4x6 on each side of the car.
I ended up buying the 2000lbs stand from O'reillys, ended up being $139 all said and done. Thing is sturdy as hell!! i don't think i could make it break if a tried lol.
