another thing i have been thinking about lately. a few months back i replaced my steering shaft that goes between the column and the gearbox. well it was purchased from ... hmm nevermind i cant remember but its a universal shaft and has to be cut to fit. when i reinstalled the new shaft i slid it as far on the splines as possible but it bottomed out on the bottom of the column. since then i can feel a clunk type feeling when i hit bumps. is that clunk being caused from the shaft being too far on the splines?
if i confused you all let me know. ill get some pics and post them to help clarify what im talking about
Probably not. The steering box doesn't move with the suspension. It should not move in relation to the steering column. Make sure the box is tight on the frame and the frame isn't cracked.
If you have a body lift or worn body mounts it's possible that the cab is moving when you hit bumps and this would change the distance between the two causing the shaft to bottom out. That's all I can think of.
If these conditions are met it should not be the problem.
Does the shaft move at all?I ended up using using a chevy piece with the pin knocked out and u-joints on both ends. The thing moves about a half inch.I think between cab and frame moving there needs to be some movement. Hope this helps. I have a 72 F-250 with power steering added,4.88s,lockers,60 and 14 bolt. Show me a picture of what you got going.
it will be tomorrow before ill be able to get a good pic but ill get you one. the steering box and cab is tight. im thinking i may just have a bearring bad inside my column...
well... found the problem. the bearring in the top of my column is there culprit. lots of play in the top portion of my column. i figure ill tear it apart in a few days and see what exactly is wrong. who knows... maybe it just needs to be tightened up
