MPG question

I have a 04 F250 and just replaced a turbo but due to a 1.5 inch cut which only allowed me to pull 17.5 lbs of boot. I cleaned and put new seals in the EGR and plan on pulling the turbo in the next day or so to clean it.

I did a highway run of about 250 miles, unloaded, cruise set at 70 and only managed 14.5 mpg. The day before I had checked it after making the repairs and had managed 16.88 mpg that was mixed but mostly city driving and driving it hard. Actually enjoying the restored power. Truck only has a straight exhaust. I have a scangauge but no programmer. ICP, IPR, all looked good.

Does that sound a little off?

It depends on when you 'reset' your Dash MPG. Until the truck comes up to operating temp (approx. 190 Coolant Temp and Oil Temp), you will get decreased mpgs. In other words, if you reset your mpgs to 'test' when your truck was already at operating temp, then you will see higher mpg. I can reset mine and drive strictly on the highway for 100 miles at 65 mph and get 23 mpg on my dash. However, driving the truck through stop and go traffic from a 75 degrees EOT and ECT, I can see my mpg drop until I hit the highway again.

With that said. 14.5 mpg's sucks if that was ALL highway miles! Also, if you just replaced your turbo, why are you pulling it to clean it? Did you perform the R&R or the dealer? Maybe they reflashed the PCM to that one everyone says kills your mpgs?

Just saw some typos from my initial post I replaced a torn turbo boot.

When i had the egr out i disconnected the batteries. The mpg reading I pulled from my scangauge was 18.5 I hand calculated it to be 14.5.

My scangauge has been way off before too. I'm not sure what causes it. I have gotten mine close to the dash gauge using hand calculations.

Here are mine:

9/18/2013
Tank Filled - 175,990
469.5 Miles Trip
25.565 Gallons
18.8 mpg Dash Gauge
18.4 mpg Manual Calculation

9/25/2013
Tank Filled - 176,502
3688.4 HRS
512.3 Miles Trip
28.827 Gallons
18.5 mpg Dash Gauge
18.8 mpg ScanGauge II
17.9 mpg Manual Calculation

10/02/2013
Tank Filled - 177,158
3701.4 HRS
655.6 Miles Trip
35.943 Gallons
18.6 mpg Dash Gauge
18.0 mpg ScanGauge II
18.24 mpg Manual Calculation

10/07/2013
Tank Filled - 177,653
3710.2 HRS
495 Miles Trip
26.501 Gallons
19.0 mpg Dash Gauge
18.68 mpg Manual Calculation

That is pretty close to what i'm getting in my new to me 2006 after the EGR delete and with tunes. I was a little disappointed when I did the manual calculation and come in consistently between 14 and 15. Gonna go in and talk to the local gear head and see what he thinks. Unfortunately, I bought the truck one day and dropped it off at the shop the next to have the 6.0 issues addressed and failed to get a baseline. But from what I've read, I should be hitting high teens.

All depends on mods and driving conditions.

A "head wind" will kill fuel economy.

So will a lift and big tires.

" ,,,,,,,,,,,, managed 16.88 mpg that was mixed but mostly city driving and driving it hard."

Sounds pretty typical to me.

No lift and 285's for tires. With the 385's the speedo is dead on, verified with the gps. I know that the truck loves the 55 mph drive for 17 miles to work but I was really surprised to loose that much mpg's at 70 on the interstate.

Yes, 285 make the SPEEDOMETER accurate.
But, the COMPUTER is OFF now, so the SG2/ODBII data and the overhead display are going to be lying more now than before.
BOTH in distance traveled AND your actual speed so the computer is more confused than normal. You are also going 3 MPH FASTER now with the 285 tires assuming the SAME speedometer indicated speed.
You are also GOING farther than the COMPUTER thinks you are.

with 265 tires...
I've driven down the hiway monitoring GPS, SG2 and speedometer and I can see that the computer MPH is dead-on with GPS, but the speedometer is 2-3 MPH FAST. The TRIP meter/odometer were the same as GPS.

So, with 285, you fixed the speedometer, but now all the other things are off. You are also going FASTER (w/285) when the speedometer says 70 than you were when the speedometer said 70 (w/265) thus having more WIND resistance which will further degrade you MPG calculations.

On long hiway trips, I use the SG2 to monitor my speed - NOT the speedometer, around town/short trips the speedometer is ok.
