E4OD ZF conversion

I have a 95 F2 351 2wd and my slush box finaly gave up all but 2nd gear. I fancy a maunal more than an auto and found a ZF S 5-42 ('88 year) in the junk yard for a wopping 100$ but its pulled and on the shelf so theres no donor truck. I did find an F150 in there for the pedal assembly but im wondering if the crossmember in my truck will work or maybe this f1s crossmember or do I have to find the crossmember for the ZF

Any help would be awesome.

The F150 crossmember will work. The manual from the 150s (Mazda) is the same length as the ZF, so it bolts up to the same place on the frame.

do yourself a favor and get yourself a motorcraft slave cylinder. even if its used, its better than replacement chinapart supply stores. you have to pull the trans to get to them, so you mightaswell get the good stuff. mine still has '89 stamped on it, 300k miles and a stiffer-than-stock clutch.

just google slave cylinder problems for these trucks, youll find countless "I've pulled my trans "x" amount of times in "x" years to replace slave"

Awesome info thanks guys. Im going today to get the ZF the pedal assembly and that cross member today. Ill be sure to look into getting a motorcraft slave. Do you think the clutches from advanced auto are anygood or should I try to go motorcraft with that too.

Two things to note:

In my searching, I didn't actually find a "motorcraft" slave or master cylinder. I did find AP branded stuff on trucks in the junkyards I picked through. The ZF I got had an AP slave on it also. Just an FYI. Here's a MC with the AP logo on there. The AP logo is also on the cap.

And the slave that was still attached to my junkyard ZF was AP branded:

I ended up using an AP master from the junkyard, and a new slave from Advance. It was better quality than I was expecting. Had some nice instructions on bleeding it, and a tool to remove the line. Also came with a new throw out bearing for about $50.

Secondly, if you've found an '88 model truck to get the pedals from, they won't work in yours. You'll need to find pedals from a '92-'97 truck. The pedals from an older truck won't work due to the huge aluminum brace that the newer trucks have (that the steering column bolts to).

I used a LUK clutch kit from Rock Auto. It was cheaper than Advance, and the diesel guys seem to have good luck with that brand. It was a nice kit too. Pilot bearing, clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and alignment tool.

Yes, it will work, as long as it's in good condition. I'm using one from an F150 on my ZF. You can have Advance or any parts store cross reference them between an F150 and a 250. I know the slave cylinder was the same between 150s and 250s, even the same part was used for Rangers, Exploders, Mazda trucks, etc.

so i picked up the the trans. I opened up the pto cover looked at the gears everything looked good that i could see all the gears engaged and a slave cylinder still bolted on, so i bought it. pulled a good pedal assembly out of a '94 F150 didnt grab the clutch switch but im thinking i should have.

i looked at the crossmember in the F1 but it had a hefy jog in it i think because it was a 4.9 i found a F3 with the IDI and a ZF and the crossmember looked just like mine so im going to try to use it even if i have to modify it.

i got all the other parts from parts store so now i need to come up with drive shaft sulotion and the croosmember

I doubt the F350 crossmember will work since the frames were so different. I looked at one also when doing my swap and I didn't think it would work. I was trying to avoid fabricating anything though.

You should be able to get the clutch interlock switch "thrown in" if you get a JY master cylinder. That's what I did

I'll look into that switch. Does the truck have the plugs avaible in the factory harness or is that something im going to have to build.

It's already in the harness. On automatic trucks, there is a jumper plugged in that you will need to remove and then you can plug it into the clutch-safety switch. You can also just leave it the way it is and it will start, however, it will start with the clutch engaged, which is not the intended way from the factory.

It will be connected to a jumper. The jumper has a plastic push pin on there so it will be pressed against a box up under the dash.

Here's a picture of mine after I got it hooked up. Just look around for it and you'll find it.

One thing you'll want to get is the PCM from a 5-speed truck. It probably doesn't need to be from a ZF-equipped truck, just a plain-jane M5R2 5-speed version should be fine. You'll get some wonky results running the E4 computer with a 5-speed equipped truck. I speak from direct experience.

What happened? My truck has been fine, not even a CEL. Still running the automatic E4OD computer. Pretty sure I have some KOEO codes stored though...
