Redhead steering slop

I took a short video of when I think is too much slop for what this gearbox cost. If this is normal I'd be surprised but I'd like some opinions before I call.

It looks like 1/4" of rotational play (give or take)

Personally I do not find that acceptable on a rebuilt RedHead box...

Just my opinion....others may differ.

Thanks. I didn't think I was being unreasonable. Is say its a little more than a 1/4" but it turns into much more at the steering wheel.

Seems like the screw is wayyyyy out.
That would be a no brainer at the shop to not let that go out.

If you're certain it's in the box that's unacceptable......i'd call them and voice my complaint....the longer you wait the more they can blame it on you.

Hmmm, my 73 developed a little extra but I attributed it to a tilt column swap.

Post Redhead's response.

Thanks, Grin

Yea I think I'd better call tomorrow and see what they say. I'm not sure what the warranty is on these but I had it 2-3 months and maybe put 300 miles on it.

I called today and spoke to someone. They said the engine must be running to check it so I did and sent them a video. I then spoke to the owner and he says its normal and I can send it back for them to evaluate. Id say the engine running really didn't make any noticeable difference.

This is what I received:
I'm sorry, there isn't any play in that gearbox. It may seem like it because the input shaft moves way more than the output, but I can see that both are moving at the same time.
The difference in movement between the input and output is drastic. The input will turn a full 4 rotations and the output will only turn a total of about 60 degrees.

Looks like slop to me. They did say send it back I know it is a big pain to do but I'm sure if it does have to much play they will take care of it.

Different truck but similar issue, you might give this thread a read. Also includes videos taken during the testing process.

After reading and watching your videos I'd say I have a similar situation. I may even have a little more slop actually. I wish I had another one of their boxes to compare to that is in fact good.

Here is the video I sent them while running:

You can see the pitman arm move just a real little bit but that was because of the way my dad was turning it. I still think its too sloppy.

My only hypothesis on this whole topic is that you were raised with rack and pinion steering. These boxes were never that tight to begin with and the slight turn that you are referring to as "slop" is perfectly normal.

Well red head agreed on mine, based on the videos and then confirmed after they received my box back that a pin had come out of the valve.
