Today, I drove 70 miles to my brothers house. Pulled up in front of his house and turned my truck off. A few minutes later I noticed a puddle of oil under the passenger side. The puddle was about the size of a softball. I crawled under under and noticed all the oil was coming from the passenger side. No oil leaks while it's just sitting there not running.
When you start it, you can see the oil run out on the ground, a very steady drip. I checked on top of the motor. Valley is dry, no fuel or oil. Looking at the back of the head, I can see oil just below where the fuel line connects.
Also, over the last couple of weeks, my truck has been really hard to start, long cranking times. Originally thought this was the batteries, replaced both batteries but no real change.
Could all this be fuel related? I can afford to be without my truck right now.
On the back of the block below each head there is a plug (allen head I think) with a o-ring that seals the high pressure oil passage tunnel driving the injectors. There are some pictures around somewhere that shows it. It would not be my favorite easy fix so hopefully it's something else.
Update.....Replaced Galley Plug today. Here is a concern I have. When I pulled the old plug, there were metal slivers on the plug. Not a lot, but several. Is this something I should be concerned about or is this normal wear?
BTW, some Ford houses are rip offs. Called one close by and they wanted $40 for the plug. Called one the same distance, just another direction, and they only wanted $10. Heck of a mark up.
Not sure on the metal shavings, but i agree, Ford dealerships earn their rep as "Stealerships". Ill call one place and get a quote and a part number, call another and get a different price, and different part number, call another and get the same part number but a different price. Theyre ridiculous
Well the oil leak is fixed. The "metal slivers" that I was referring to were actually pieces of the oring. However, I did create a new problem. I wasn't paying attention when I was prying the down pipe out of the way and broke the exterior valve cover plug the I was prying against. I really need to start paying attention.
Thanks for all the help guys. I have learned how to do so many repairs to my truck and save myself some money, not time, but money.
I was having a hard start problem a few weeks ago. It also had a rough idle, and would fall flat on its face if it wasnt warmed up for at least 15 minutes. Ended up that it was low on oil. Did an oil change and all is well now. Could be that you lost that much oil and thats why youre having a hard start issue.
I'm pretty sure that was the case. After replacing the plug and refilling the oil, it would definitely turn over faster. I let it run for about 30 minutes, I was to get the air out of the system. It should start much easier now.
