So I've recently developed a ticking noise in my truck that has grown susbstantially worse over the last 700mi or so. It sounds like a lifter but the truck runs like a champ and doesn't have any codes, etc. I tried a hunch today and decided to check the torque converter bolts because I had a problem with my Jeep once where a bolt came loose on the converter and it made a noice that sounded similar. Anyhow, I crawled under the truck today and pulled the bottom and lower front inspection plugs out of the bellhousing and had a look. With the truck running you can see that there is a bit of a wobble to both the converter and the ring gear on the flexplate. I checked all the bolts on the converter and they all seemed pretty good with the exception of two that moved slightly. The next thing is, if it's running and you cover both bell housing plug holes with your hands while you're under it, the noise virtually disappears but can still be heard if you're standing beside the truck. Maybe the noise is still projecting forward through the engine? Thoughts?
The time it sounded more pronounced was as the engine was slowing down after it was revved, it sounded like valve train noise to me. Perhaps video capture near the bottom of the bellhousing would give a better idea of what the noise sounds like that you are hearing.
I'll try and get one from underneath. When I did the #8 injector for the third time a few weekends ago I checked the top end and everything seemed to move fine when I turned the engine over with the valve cover off.
If it were the flex plate being cracked it would do it regardless of temp. What oil weight are you running? Are you running the OEM oil cap and OEM filter? Also do you show oil pressure on the factory gauge at all times.
You say that you have replaced the #8 injector 3 times, were they OEM reman injectors and have you had the dynamic fuel pressure tested? It needs to remain above 45 PSI at all times and most importantly at wide open throttle ( WOT )

Running Rotella T5 10W30 at the moment with a Motorcraft filter and factory cap. Oil pressure reads fine and never bobbles.
Injectors were Alliant rebuilts. I haven't checked the fuel pressure recently but when I did check it last it was 65 at idle with the blue spring. I'll toss a gauge on it tomorrow and see where she currently sits.
Last time my guy scanned the truck it showed cylinder #8 compression down 20% when cold and about 8% when warmed up.
I am thinking lifters.
Pull off a valve cover and use a dial indicator
and compare lift of the intakes to the other intakes and so on.
Take a good look at the back lifters. Also look for metal in the
oil that you drain out and when you clean the magnet.

I had checked visually when I did the #8 injector and everything seemed to be moving fine. No metal in the oil when I changed it 100mi ago. I even stuck a flexible magnet into the pan and got nothing. My tech and I originally thought lifters but this noise started mildly over 20K ago and just started getting as noisy as it is about 1K ago. If it was a lifter it should have grenaded long before now and taken more out with it.

I am sure hoping that isn't the case but it's always a possibility.
Maybe rather than start by pulling the tranny I'll have my guy pull the valve cover again and actually check those valves with a gauge. I'm also going to see if he has a barescope to check on that #8 cylinder. I take it in on Tuesday afternoon so we'll see what he finds.
