clutch linkage

I have a 75 f-100 with a 360 and 4sd. I just got it and it had a lot of cluch free travel, like over 3 inches? The link was adjusted out almost as far as it would go, so a made a new rod that was about 1.5 inches longer so I could adjust it without the bullet/crayon/whatever thing falling off. My question is, why did I need to make it longer? I thought maybe the clutch is about shot but I had to do the same thing on a friends truck (same setup) right after he had a new clutch put in. any ideas?

Look for wear in the linkage including the bushings in the end of the cross shaft

77.5 F250/400/NP435/4x4.
Know were I can find them?
