Unhappy surprise! more problem with the 352FE

ok so I put a new mechanical fuel pump on it and ran about 8-10 gallons through it and now it has quit (so it seems) I got it to pull some fuel but it didn't keep a steady flow, how much fuel has to be in the original tank behind the seat before it will pick it up? I put about 1 gallon in it. if I put a new one on then is there a certain brand of mechanical fuel pump you would recommend? thanx and god bless you, me, and my truck!

352 FE fuel problem

You may wish to try an auxiliary fuel tank (mine is a plastic one from a Tecumseh 5hp) connected directly to the fuel pump inlet, then check flow at the carb connection. My reason for doing this is that there can be a number of connections on the pump suction side that leak even the slightest amount of air which can greatly affect fuel pump performance. There may also be a collapsed inside lining of a fuel hose, or a tank suction end clogged with corrosion particles from rust inside the tank. The aux tank is re-usable. Have fun.

Man I so feel your pain..... I chased this same issue with my truck, and my answer ended up being a small in-line electric fuel pump that I mounted in the cab above the fuel tank with a filter and a short length of clear hose between the fuel tank and the filter. I spent $30 on a off-the-shelf pump for V8s and makes 9-10lb of pressure. I have my mechanical pump still in line and the electric pump is on a switch. My truck seemed to do ok around town as long as I didnt hit the gas to hard, but once I got up to highway speeds then it would die with in a few miles of town. For reasons I still have not wrapped my head around the engine would suck all the gas out of the carb, just like the fuel pump was not working at all. If I let it sit and then prime the carb it would start up right away.

Hope that helps

so I could just make a fuel pump delete plate and put in an inline electric fuel pump?

I chased this problem and it was a hose that would kink as the truck moved. I was only using the aux tank and I put too long of a rubber hose between the frame & the tank. This loop I had created would pinch as the truck moved and starve the carb of gas. I had to put a shorter piece of hose on. With the incab tanks I have seen some with a pinhole rusted in the pick-up tube, high towards the top. It sounds like you have some rust blocking flow or a hole somewhere sucking air.

I have the electric feeding the mechanical feeding the carb. I also fashioned a new pickup tube from brake line and put it in the location of the sending unit, ran all new fuel line bypassing the tank selector and going straight to the mechanical pump. Lastly I put a fuel pressure gauge near the carb so that I could check the pressure at any given time. When I see a decline in pressure then it is time to change fuel filters... I take some pics of what I did in the cab if it would help you any.....

Don't buy anything else until you are sure the lines out of the tank are not clogged. Pull the tank side line off at the pump and see if gas is flowing freely.

I replaced the entire fuel delivery system including lines and tank. I got it running again with no issues, I just don't think it was picking up the fuel because the level was too low and I was sitting on a hill. thanx for all info
