31-242-3, Thoughts, Install tips

I have been heavily considering this cam. Operating range is 1600-5800rpms. It would be going in sig truck. Of note it is equipped with a 4spd transmission, and at 50mph I am at 2k. Looking for a little more oomph. I currently have a summit stage 1 intake, I think summits smallest cam, 600 edelbrock carburetor and gt40p heads. Valve springs have been upgraded to be safe to .600 lift. Headers, and dual 2 1/4 exhaust.
Thoughts and suggestions welcome. I should also add this is basically a slightly heavy mustang(3800lbs with me in it) with a huge trunk its a 2wd short bed and all it hauls is myself 99% of the time.

I am also open to tips on installing a cam what to look for or anything that will save me some headaches.

You're going the wrong direction to get "umph" from a small displacement V8, the edelbrock cam probably has similar 0.050" duration specs which is too much for a truck motor IMO, a better choice would be the 35-234-3.

Ok i checked that cam out and it says it's for a 351 Is that correct? So if i run that i would need to go to the 351 firing order correct?

Both motors can use the same cams and yes this one uses the HO firing order and all you need to change is how the plugs are wired.

Conanski, what cam do you run in your 302?

If I run the suggested cam, I would go with new lifters as well. What else would I need to complete the cam swap.

Intake gaskets
Water pump(possibly replace) gaskets.

Anything else?

I have an XE264 roller cam in mine since it was a native roller block, but if I had my time back I would have used the XE258 instead because this one really doesn't come alive until 2000rpm which is all wrong for a heavy truck that is used mostly for towing.

In your case nothing but cam, lifters, and gaskets needed for the swap, but if the timing set has some milage on it then that's not a bad idea either.

Would I need to degree the cam? Advance or retard it or just install it?

Degreeing a cam is really just checking that it is ground to match the spec sheet, if you buy the right cam for the job you just need to installed it straight up.
