Setting the Choke

Hi Folks,
I have a question regarding setting the choke. Here's my "situation" and this may be typical of a carburetor but I don't remember having this "problem" back when in my Oldsmobile days...

302 engine with an Edelbrock 1406 carb. Electric Choke.

I get in in the morning, pump the gas and crank the key. Engine fires up and the idle is about 1100/1200 rpm. The second I tap the accelerator the idle drops to the warm idle say 700/800 rpm. My understanding was that when the choke is set, the choke sets the idle based off the choke cam and is adjusted off the choke idle screw. I adjusted the choke idle and I still have the same condition.

Can anyone explain to me how the choked idle setting works? Does something sound out of whack or is this completely normal?

Thanks,

First off, make sure the choke idle speed screw is making it's way to the fastest RPM portion of the cam. If the choke kicks off as soon as you tap the gas, than that means you do not have enough choke cap tension. And that will prevent the high idle cam from setting all the way.

As long as the engine is running ok, don't worry about it. If it wants to stall after you kick it down, then do what someone else suggested, and turn the choke adjustment up higher(richer). It will take several mornings to get it just right.
