OK I have a rebuilt 390 with a 2 barrle 2100 rebuilt carb. everythings tuned and its running great except, I'm getting about 6 miles a gallon which is to be expected and its blowing black smoke. Lol I want a deisel but I dont think my gas truck is supposed to be that way
black smoke on a gas engine means it's running rich.
Agree. Something is not right with the carb. I'd get it fixed ASAP... extra fuel is not kind to the cylinder walls. Besides... fixed you may get a 50% mileage increase to 9 MPG. The "Autoline" brand reman carb from Autozone is doing fine on my 400.
Everything is NOT tuned and running great if it's blowing black smoke. That's excess fuel, which means some one didn't know how to tune the carb.
Spot on. You can't say things are great when they're clearly not. Depending on how bad the smoke is, it could even be a blown or improperly seated power valve.

Thank you for the replys everyone, well what should I do.. new carb? I have rebuilt my carb but im not gonna like I don't know how to adjust it. I adjusted the idler screw, and the jets (the two screws on the bottom front) and that was all. Sorry I took so long to write back thank you again
Like most things carbs are easy if you know what you are doing and practice. I don't! I buy reman for OE or new. My '78/400M has an Autoline reman from AZ. Adjust the idle screws a little and it runs great. That would be my suggestion. NAPA carries reman also but it was a lot more expensive in my application.
Is the engine idling smoothly? Black smoke all the time, or is it only during acceleration, idle, or cruise?

Why on earth would you pass up an opportunity to learn something new AND spend extra money?
