In addition to another truck, I am looking at what is advertised as a factory 1964 f100 4x4. What things can I be looking at to make sure it's a factory 4x4 and not a chassy swap that could have been potentially patched together?
VIN # on frame and warranty plate should match and read F11_____, not F10____
4x4 has battery under the RT floorboard. Should also have 120" wheelbase and wrong bed (57-60 style).
Post some pics if you can.
The 66 half tons could have the correct styleside bed. All others as mentioned had either the "wrong bed" , stepside, or flatdeck. F250 vin started with F26. All except 66 half tons will have the early style cab with the inside steps when you open the door, and battery under passenger floor. All originally had a divorced mount Dana 24 Tcase. Not sure about F100s, but F250s had a different steering column and a 4 spoke steering wheel than the 2wds.
Also larger wheelwell radius on the front fenders than 2wd.
Called a flairside. I try to remember the name by knowing the fenders Flair out.
The frame Vin on my 62 4x4 is located on top of the frame nearly centered of the battery compartment. You can get a rubbing from it by cleaning the area and using alum. or metal tape and a stick.
The other location is right side top of frame up near the front shock mount.
While I wait for the VIN, here are some pictures. I've requested more. Asking price is 6500
I know various things aren't original such as the steering wheel, gauge cluster etc. Did these trucks have factory door panels or was that an option or what?
They had door panels but if you are asking about the hole in the right door forward, it looks to be a speaker or hole cut in for a speaker.... may not be an original door.
A year ago I was young, ignorant and naive and would have serously questioned a 6500 asking price but after spending a lot of cash on my truck, I have come to appreciate a good body, fenders, paint, grill, radiator support, glass, anti rattle kits, rubber set, refurbished under the hood items. etc. It all adds up fast.
I am coveting the bed. The dash is pretty darn fancy.
I suggest you get some close up pictures of the floors, door posts, under hood near the hinges and the radiator support area, the bed, etc.
You can not rely on a person's statement about the vin...... I have been lied too several times and have driven hundreds of miles to be dissapointed that the seller did not actually check the vin after being asked to specifically go out to the truck and do so.
I am questioning that asking price as it's at the absolute max of my budget but I've been looking for a 4x4 for a while now. I'm beginning to wonder if it's factory though. Still no word on VIN (I can't verify it myself as I'm 5 hours away) but he did tell me the battery is in the engine bay. Either it was relocated or was a 2wd with 4wd parts added. I'm still awaiting more detailed pictures but he did mention there are steps inside the cab, which sounds to me like it could be a 4x4 cab... It's still real early in the process but I may just saddle up on saturday and check it out with my own eyes.
looks like short bed
seller should have no problem with disclosing vin
I don't see the tc hanging down
is this a 66
maybe that's a leaf spring in the front
My eyes might be deceiving me but I don't see a clutch pedal haning down on the left side of the steering column. It could be an automatic fabed into this truck. I don't believe there were any 4wd trucks that had auto shift in 64. It could be a 2wd cab onto a 4wd frame so battery would have to be placed in the engine comp as there is no hole in the floor on the 2wd trucks. 66 f100 4wd did not have a leaf spring front suspension. Maybe I missed it but what engine does this truck have in it?
Called a Flareside. I try to remember the name by knowing the fenders flare out.
The rear fenders have nothing to do with it. The upper section of the right/left bedsides flare outwards.
4WD's were not available with A/T until 1973. What the hell the 4 speed A/T is from, I dunno. No Ford truck had an A/T shift lever on the floor until the 21st century.
Door trim panels (see pic at right) were part of the Custom Cab package as were stainless steel windshield reveal mouldings that this truck does have.
The only way to verify if it is a Custom Cab...or not, is by the BODY code stamped on the Warranty Plate...located on the left door face below the latch.
Seat upholstery is wrong, the seat might be too. Taillamps are wrong, dunno what they're from, wheels are aftermarket.
Dash butchered to install an aftermarket radio, holes cut in doors to install speakers.
Has a gypo "fitz-all" autoparts store replacement ignition switch, the front fender emblems are missing as are the Custom Cab (if it is) nameplates on the doors.
Tailgate chains are missing...and white paint has been used for decades by unscrupulous sellers to hide the sins.
Do not believe a single word a seller claims! Private sells lie just like used/new car dealers, lawyers, politicians and TV evangelists.
Do not believe the miles shown on the odometer, as it reads to 99999.9 then returns to ZERO!
IMO: It's an overpriced Frankenstein Monster with parts swapped from lawd only knows what: PASS!
