Hey, my 302 in my truck is about dead. I would like to find a engine out of the junk yard with low miles that would fit in my truck. It's a 89 F150 4x4 with a 4 speed granny transmission with a 302 in it now. Could some body give me a list of engines that would fit into my truck without many mods so i can keep my eye out. Thanks
Get the 300 six if you want a work motor thats strong, good low end torque, but alil slow in the acceleration dept. I have owned a 300/6 and a 302 and i like the 302 better. The 302 is pretty reliable, not as much as the six though. The 302 has less low end torque, but its pretty peppy when you get the RPMs up, as you know from owning one. If you liked the power and acceleration of the 302, stick with it. If you want a chance, want more low end power but less acceleration, that get the 6. My new 302 would smoke my old 300 in a race. But the 300 would out work the 302 with a load on it. I havn't put my snowmobile trailer on the 302 yet, but i'm gonna soon cuz i wanna see how well they can tow in comparison to eachother.
Primary rig is:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Sunroof, and some 32" BFG Muds .
Pictures are in!!
Then theres:
99' Mustang GT 4.6L
88' F-250 Superduty 4x4 351/c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 with a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed is 65mph, Go Baby Go!
If you go with the 300-6, you will need new motor mounts, but your transmission will bolt right up--no adaptor needed. If your replacement engine is EFI then you'll need a computer from a ford truck that had the same sized engine that you swap in and that had a manual trans. I.E. if you have a 302 and a t-18 and you swap in a 300-6, you need a computer from a truck that had a 300-6 and a manual trans. You will also need the underhood wiring harness from a truck that had a EFI 300-6(if that is the motor you're putting in your truck)
If I were you (and I'm almost in the same boat as you, my '89 f-150 has 205,000 miles) I'd just get a 302 from the junkyard. You would not have to swap anything or rig anything up to work, it'd be a straight swap. And 302's are as common as dirt. Plus since you're putting the same engine back in, you would not have to worry about all the dozens of little things that you have to run to the store for one at a time.

I can't decide between the 6 or a 351. would the 351 be hard to install. i wan't the V-8 sound and something that will get up and go. my truck has a 2 inch lift and 33inch tires with stock 3.55 gears. the truck runs about 2300 rpms at 55mph. would 4.10 gears make my gas milage suffer much? and what kind of rpms would i be running if i swaped to 4.10 gears? I would like to make it get up and go like it use to before i put the bigger tires on. thanks
I have an 1989 Ford as well with a 4.2L V6. Everything mechanically is stock but the trucks body is mint. I was wondering what it would take to get a 351 in it to make it a little more fun to drive and a little louder. What will I need and how much will it set me back ABOUT?

everyone has good ideas but no one is talking about the bottom motor mounts you cant just change motors or the mounts on the motors, you have to change bottom mounts on the frame rail, lets get it all right guys, dont put the guy in a bind when he puts a 300-6 in,those 302 bottom mounts are way off..they will bolt right in the frame well, predrilled holes from factory, but a lot of junk yards dont like you or them to take them off, even if engine out..at least thats the junk yards here in iowa..
If'n ya are gonna do a engine swap dont scrimp on something like motor mounts. They are cheap insurance. DONT INSTALL USED MOUNTS, They have already been subjected to strain and are gonnna break.
