I own a 1994 E350 with 267,000 miles. Trans was replaced 20,000 ago because of OD light coming on and hard shifting, I took it to ford and they replaced the speed sensor but that did not help. the TPS has been replaced and the voltages are 1.20 at idle and about 4.5 volts full throttle, I tested for ground at TPS thats good, truck is alwayes loaded weight is about 11,000 Lbs, if i get on the throttle it starts shifting erratic and stays that way untill i shut it off and restart, same holds true if i climb a hill erratic shift and hard shifting till i cut the key and restart, I also replaced the injection pump about 3 or four thousand miles ago, i installed new pump and the truck restarted as soon as it primed up no smoke and starts great so i never messed with it again.could the timing be so far off that it is lugging the engine and causing my shifting trouble I run a small business and need this truck as I can not afford to replace it. Trans is cooled with stock radiator and then runs thru a ext. cooler then a filter, back to the trans nothing i have done seems to help for very long.
Well my speedometer works perfect and now my symptons have changed truck works great in the morning, after 15 min warm up. drive it about 20 miles then it wont shift to 3rd but if it does the truck goes into netural untill i slow down to about 25 then it may do this three or four times and all at once it starts shifting perfect????? shut it down long enough to do a job couple hrs. then head out it will do it again this time it went into limp mode and the OD light stayed on so I went to a trans shop that was close by to get them to read the code (AAmco) the guy there could not locate the plug. he looked everywhere under the hood and in the cab. he said that it could be under the left battery but if we pulled the battery we would loose the code, So I pulled the battery and nothing no place to plug in there was a red connector that would hold about 5 wires but there was only 2 and it would not fit his scanner, I drove it about 10 miles shifting perfect then after a stop light started again this time no limp mode and it finally just shifted into third No overdrive like limp mode without the flashing OD light and harsh shifting, Got home cleaned all the connections on trans and the tps but noticed that there was no heat shield on the right side of trans (I read a thread earlier about a shield protecting the connections on the right side but I was not sure if the 7.3 IDI had this shield) Any help would be welcome I am willing to try anything at this point and the trans fluid looks good and smells good
If you can't read the codes just start randomly replacing things. You might eventually find the problem. Or you could take it to a mechanic that knows what he is doing. Not all of them do.
Yes I guess 1994 still had some Indirect Injection engines but they also had the 7.3L Direct Injection engines in 1994. 1994 was the last year Ford used the Indirect Injection engines (IDI).
But I think that both engines in 1994 had the Data Link Connector by the battery.
Not in the vans. The vans had the IDI all year and didn't get the Powerstroke until 1995. On;y the pickup had the Powerstroke in 1994, and then only with the manual transmission.
This truck has the 7.3 IDI the injectors are in the intake manifold, The pic with the red connector looks like mine but mine only has two wires, Replacing parts? I have replaced the vss, the tps, the transmission, injection pump. not trans related i know, so what is left the pmc? should i try to jump those two wires and see if i get any codes? Also I have had a lot of trucks before and I know this truck is 18, 19 years old but It has incredable power when its right it pulls 11,500 pounds every day with ease up steep hills i leave all others behind I love this truck It has never failed to start first try on cold Indiana mornings, plows thru snow with ease, I also have a 1999 F350 with a 6.8 V10 that does not hold a candle to this truck pulling 10,000 in the back every day, I am will to try or replace whatever it takes to repair it. My business partner wants to get rid of it but he never drives any of our trucks and he has no idea what a pleasure it is to drive something with that kind of power. Does anyone know why it would netural out in 3rd gear one min and be fine the next??????????
I will sure give it a try first thing tomorrow Ill take some pic's and try to post. Thanks for the interest in my problem. and you are correct there is a single wire connector there.
The single wire connector is the one that is grounded to start the self-tests.
Any OBD-1 code reader should plug into those two plugs and read the codes.
You should be able to get the KOEO electrical test and right after that there is a spacer (10) and then the stored codes are read out. Note both the KOEO and the stored codes will repeated twice.
You can also ground the single wire connector, turn on the key (no start) and count the flashes of the MIL in the dash cluster.
Whow now that is one big clear pic, I pulled all the connectors from the left side the red connector has only two wires. there is a single gray connector and the black connector that just has a cap on it
