1964 w/ a 302?

Another thread from me. I greatly appreciate the replies from the last thread. So much help. I've came back again with more questions from the wise ones.

I have a '64 F100 with a 292, three speed. But I want to slap in a more common Ford engine. I'd want to be able to drive to autozone/napa/etc. and be able to purchase parts easily. But not only have plenty of parts to choose from but also cheap since it's so easily available. Is a 302 pretty good? Most parts pretty cheap and or reasonable?

Or do you guys have something else in mind?

And if you mention a engine, please feel free to add from which vehicle it should be taken out of. I greatly appreciate the replies. Thank you.

Yes a 302 would be great, if you use a carburetor engine.

A 292 is a very reliable engine. A properly rebuilt one or used one in good shape will not need much. Normal maintenance items are just as cheap as a 302 or other common engine because they are, in many cases, the same.

Further, with most 302 swaps, you will get decreased power and performance, so it's less fun to drive, and costs more in the long run. The exception seems to be the newer roller cammed and fuel injected 5.0. Then, there is also the additional cost of installation for the 302. Can you do the swap yourself or will you be paying someone? If you're paying someone, put the money into the 292 and enjoy it. If you do it yourself, maybe it will be cost effective.

You should learn more about the 292, what it is capable of, and see if it may actually suit your goals. And if you do swap, make sure it is a swap that will gain something for you , rather than put yourself a few steps back for a good chunk of time and/or change.

I agree....a '64 292 is actually quite common and reliable, so long as it hasn't been abused. Those motors will last a lifetime, literally. The only drawback IMO is when they put variations of that motor into big 20,000lb. trucks--that's when that little Y-block motor huffed and puffed even when new. But for an F100 of that vintage?? Perfect motor; stick with it! And BTW, parts are much more available than you probably think...

Ah. I see. My 292 is in good shape but I need a new water pump. I tried autozone, napa, o'reily's and they don't have what I'm looking for. It's almost non-existing. I don't want to rely online stores and websites just to work on my truck.

EDIT:
Gentlemen, I managed how to find it. Instead of checking at 64, I gotta check it under a 62. It came up on autozones website. Special order. 100 bucks. Thanks for your guys input. I shall stick with my 292.

It is frustrating waiting 3 days for engine parts, whether they are ordered from a local store or on-line. That said, all parts are available and the cost is comparable to newer motors. I got a fuel pump at a local store (in stock). Assuming the water pump is original or once replaced, it is a 25-50 year event. Not enough for me ot justify replacing a serviceable engine and transmission (newer motors will not directly bolt to the old tranny) The annual valve adjustment is more of a pain.

I second other comments on reliability and power. The 292 makes power down low where a truck motor should and will run forever on modern high zinc oils (Valoline ZR or a diesel oil that is not LE). Use a good radiator flush, replace the water pump, replace the timing chain if the timing reading is bouncing around, adjust the valve lash, change the plug wires, cap, rotor, and throw in a Petronic ignition. This will cost $200-300 which will likely be less than the parts needed to make a new bed for a 302.

The 292 really does grow on you. This is my second one, both in slicks. I love em.

Since the 302 wasn't introduced until 1968 (cars), installed in F100's beginning in 1969, no engine mounting parts from a 1969/79 F100 302/1975/79 F150 302 will work on 1961/64's with 292's or I-6's.

An aftermarket engine mounting kit will be required.
