Budd Duallies
The wheels on the F5 are among the last things I have worked on. Thinking they were Firestone I was planning on replacing. On closer inspection they are Budd Duals. Stamped on the inside is the PN C-48840-D. They are in good shape but have no idea how to get the tire off. This truck was once a Fire truck with a water tank I think. Anyway, any insights on how to change the tires on these would be helpful.

The Budd #48840 has the "widow maker" Firestone RH-5° outer rim. It is a 20" x 6" rim that was recommended for a 7.50 x 20" tire, but was also approved for an 8.25" tire. Most reputable shops won't touch these anymore for insurance and lawyer reasons, and you sure don't want to mess with them yourself. Safer replacement wheels are available either in tubeless (19.5" or 22.5" sizes), or in other safer tube type 20" rim designs. I have an ad in the FTE classifieds for the 19.5s, and I know that Josh Madsen has some 22.5s available. Tube type 20s with safer Firestone or Goodyear outer rims can still be found in yards, but it might take some looking. Please be careful with them too, I had a 17" Goodyear rim come apart with a bang a few days ago. Stu
