I never thought I would make the plunge but here I am with my brand new (to me) 2005 6.0 Excursions. It was a big internal debate on whether or not to go with the 6.0 and take the chance or go with the more reliable 7.3 but I got a pretty good deal so I went for it.
I'm up in the air on deleting or bullet proofing the EGR.
Truck has 175k had EGR blow out at 108k and had the turbo, egr and pretty much everything involved replaced at the tune of $7500, ouch.
I'm trying to avoid that route and make this engine as reliable as possible.
For fun I'll be replacing the front end with a super duty.
Get yourself a gauge like scangauge 2 or an app for your smart phone to monitor the vitals. After that you can get a better feel for any issues that might come up. Plus you can post values of sensors if you ever have any problems.
Supersede,
Welcome to FTE!!! Gauges are a must. A good ALT and Batteries are at the top of the page if they go south they'll take the FICM and injectors with them

I've never heard that, I just read into it. This is my first new age diesel. I've owned 12v cummins a 6.5 and some older 300sd/rabbits.
Loved my cummins but damn if they would've put a cummins in a large vehicle
Stiction ( dirty injectors ) is a constant battle with these things. Most of us use a fuel additive (I use Diesel Kleen , Gray Bottle) but you have to remember the Injectors are activated by High Pressure Oil so they get dirty there to. Some use a oil additive called rev- X or Archoil to clean a lubricate the spool valves. Lots to learn about these engines but. with proper maintenance they'll behave theirself
I have never dealt with stiction like many others have. I have never used an oil additive either. I run Delo 400LE 15w40 and I change the oil every 4 months. Sometimes I will only have 1000 miles on the oil. Maybe a liitle overboard but it seems to work for me.
I did a lot of reading on this site before I took the 6.0 plunge...
I will say that a think the 6.0 is a great engine with great power and decent economy.
With that being said... all of the upgrades in my signature were by necessity and not optional. Read the site, know the symptoms of all the common problems, and be prepared to invest in upgrades if you have any problems.
We love our 6.0 Excursion... hope it works out the same for you!
An app? Is there anything that phones can't do these days?
Definitely going to get some gauges.
Dashboss for IOS devices and torque pro for android, from everything I have read the Dashboss is the most complete of the 2 but a bit more expensive to get set up but you get what you pay for .

BTW, Welcome to the club and where are the pics???
As requested.
2005 Eddie Bauer with black and tan interior.
Wouldn't you know it, within 2 days someone dinged the crap out of the passenger side door. Have a 18" dent that looks like it came from a shopping cart at mach 1 into the panel.
Looks like I'm going to be required to install pungie sticks around the vehicle when parking at walmart.

low voltage off the oem alternator takes out the batteries,
and helps kill the ficm, and down stream of that is the injectors.
cloggy coolant plugs up the oil cooler, takes out the egr cooler,
and goes for the head gaskets.
oil changes past 5k, help to cause stiction and accelerated wear
on injectors.
thats' most of the uglies with this engine.
get some gauges. learn what you should be seeing as values on an ok motor.
change the oil at 5k intervals
keep the coolant clean, and the correct type
get an alternator that will maintain 14.5 volts charge rate.
fuel filters should be OEM
Most run a Rotella 5w40 syntetic oil year round it good oil weight for the Injects, fuel add helps too as stated, I run a stanadyne or diesel kleen which can be found anywhere, this will help in algie growth, water dispersal ,and lube ,Ford Cetain boost is good but pricey ,Keep the Coolent changed every 10,000 or less depends on what you pull, and always use OEM fuel and Oil filters no aftermarket ,and OEM oil Cap. I understand Racor filter we can use. get the Gauge and keep an eye on ECT ( coolent Temp), Eot ( oil temp)
not to exceed 15 deg between the two.
