hi im new here i have a 89 ford f-250 460 fuel injected. i recently pulled the motor and rebuilt it due to having 260,00+ miles. everything went back stock except we solid mounted the motor and put a bigger cam in it and blocked off the egr. iv set the timing exactly how the chilton book said to. and it wont fire after playing with the distributor i finially got it to fire and i set the timing with the spout connector out at 12degrees advanced. but after you shut it off it will not start back up without messing with the distributor again. iv also tried this at 5 degrees advanced. n if you try and drive the truck after you finially get the truck to start and the timing set it has no power at all. and the ecu is pulling the timing out 30 to 40 degrees with spout connector in. is there a sensor or something i could be missing? i dont understand this at all.
Did you have the valves done?
If so did you use the same push rods or push rod length?
If so thah may be your problem if you did not do a push rod length test.
I am having a similar problem with my 460 v8 (1977 vintage) have no idea why. would like a thred that discusses this. no rebuild JUST dist pickup coil change
Iv been told of you just change the pick up coil then you can't ever get timing spot on again because the magnet pickups sit deferently to just by a new distributor. I replaced just the pick up in my 302mustang distributor and it seems to be fine tho. Did you pull your spout connecter while trying to set timing?
How big of a cam did you go with? The fuelie 7.5 liter sds are limited on what cam you can run in them. It plays havoc on the ecm. Your timing chain from factory had a built in retard as well. 12 degree advance should not affect it that much. I would check the cam and make sure it's a speed density friendly design. If it is back track to try again. Bring number 1 back to TDC on compression stroke and see where your dizzy is oriented too.
I'm not saying it's not. That's just what I was told after I changed the stater in my distributor
timing indicates when the spark plug is fired. This signal is from the plug wire and has nothing to do with pickup coils or anything else. Factory setting is 12 degrees BTDC with spout plug removed. It will change dramatically with the spout plug in.
