460 C6 to AOD Conversion
But if 1:1 will give you comfortable RPM for the speed you drive, a T19 is reputedly the stronger transmission, & a slightly easier swap.
I usually drive around 55mph, with the same axle & tires as you, so a 4-speed is fine.
Otherwise, yes, go 5-speed.
And, of course, I can afford to wait and shop for a "salvage yard special". We have a "Pick-N-Pull" here in St. Louis. If I keep my eyes open, I may be able to find a truck with the clutch linkage, the clutch master cylinder, lines, maybe even the transmission (although not too likely). But if I wait to have all the pieces, then I can assemble the system. Thanks, Dave. And everyone else.
But I am curious if the T-19 is easier to come by. This is just going to take some more research.
Stay in touch. Remember this all started with wanting to find a way to put a locking torque converter and E40D/4R100 in place of a C-6. Now it looks like the ZF may be the better way to go..
Also, when you mention swapping the EFI 460, do you mean you are replacing your EFI 460 or are you installing an EFI 460?
I am sure a good solid tune up will make a little difference, too. I just replaced the Autolite carb with a Edelbrock 600CFM #1406.
The AOD-E, etc are electronically controlled versions of the AOD and need a controller. They're weak and not worth swapping behind a big block.
The E4OD is basically a C6 with an overdrive and yes, it does have a locking converter. It needs a controller to run, but you get full control over shift points, converter lockup, etc. They were the heaviest duty OD trans installed in the 80-96/7 trucks.
As for the EFI swap, I'm replacing a carb'd 351 with an EFI 460 and keeping the fuel injection. I'm swapping the harness and computer over and plan on using the factory computer to run the E4OD. Basically the driveline in my 86 SuperCab will be the same as a 97 F350. It's a lot of work but in the end I'm hoping for the best mileage I can get as well as a truck that runs and drives like any new truck. I'm not doing it just to save money on gas - my goal is a meager 10mpg average city/highway.
Your only problem is the pedal assembly. You need to look at the later trucks for the tranny and other parts, but you are going to need a 86-dwn clutch pedal assembly, the later ones won't fit.
The ZF appears to be the simpler way to go and bypass all the electronics installation of the E40D/4R100.
However, it will require more tracking down of parts to make it work.
Either way, it will be a waiting game to gather all the required components.
Still less expensive than a GV unit. And it will work better, too.
