1978 F-150 460, Can I swap the C6 for an AOD?

Greetings fellow enthusiasts. Just joined today, so please pardon the "noobishness" of my first post.
I have a '78 F-150, A-code 460, C6 auto, 2WD, single cab, long bed, etc. Been sitting in the weeds for 11 years.
I've been doing a lot of research on rebuilding the 460, but transmissions aren't my specialty. Does anyone know what is involved in swapping the C6 for an AOD, or if it's even possible?
Engine is still all stock, with the exception of the conversion to run on propane the last 10+ years of its life. 305,000 miles when it burnt rod and/or main bearings.
Any info/tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I am aware the C6 and AOD trannies are not the same length. You would need to shorten the driveshaft and have it balanced. I do not think that the cross member can be re-used for the AOD trans later year 460's used. Then you also have the headache of wiring things up.

It CAN be done, with the proper amount of work and cash.

Thanks. That pretty much backs up what I've read already. I just want to get the cruising RPM's down. If there is a simpler way to do that, I would certainly appreciate the help.

What are your plans for the truck? Unless you are doing some heavy towing or a bunch of rock crawling, why not swap out for a tall ring and pinion gear? You have a 460 that you are building so torque and power are not an issue.

I agree with Steve, I wouldn't think twice about going with 300's. I've been toying with the idea of an aux. OD, but they're pricey. I'm running a 390 in mine with 4wd and she gets a consistent 13, I would think I could bump it up a bit with a 300 setup for cheap money.

You guys are missing the obvious. They did not make a big-block bell pattern AOD.

You would need an E4OD from a 460 truck. And also a trans controller since they are electronically controlled. May need to space out the flexplate also.

LoL.! This is just gonna be a hot rod/show truck project, but this is exactly why I was gonna go with a box Chevy, big block stroker and a 700R.. Everything is interchangeable.! Then my grandfather (the truck's actual owner) offered to let me fix up this old Ford that might as well have been mine anyway. Had to start my research all over again because almost nothing can be swapped from one set up to another. Don't get me wrong, I love my old Ford, but HOLY CRAP.! LoL.! Thanks a lot to all of you, though. I'll keep an eye on this in case something else comes up.
