Stupid headers!!! 71 w/460 2wd

i'm so tired of looking for a picture or spending money on headers that don't work. my question is:

If i dropped a 460 into a 71 f250, essentially making it a 73-79, can i bolt headers that fit a 74-79 f250 with 2wd? Major problem is the steering box.

Do the later models have the "behind the axle" steering set up, putting the gear box in the same place as the early models (67-72)?

i already know that jeffs bronco graveyard sells a set of fenderwell exits that are absolutely bad ***, and its all i want in life right now, but cant afford it. (500.00$). hedman hedders sells a set of headers that sweep inside of the framerails that are designed for the 74-79 models part # 89140 those fit my budget, but they're for a 74, not a 71. what do i do? anyone else swap a 460 in or am i the first one? j/k...

I'll try to help if I can. The layout of the engine bay area is basically the same from 65 to 79. I am aware that in 73 that the FE engine perches were modified a bit to use the Saginaw steering gear. The Saginaw gear has a larger & longer area on top where the shaft connects for the hydraulics to connect. It uses the same bolt holes to the chassis.

Headers are only listed for the years that the engine was factory installed. With the Saginaw power steering gear installed on correct drivers side perch, the late 70s 460 headers should work in your truck.

I have a similar situation in that my 72 (with 390 2wd) has the huge camper fuel tank. What I've heard id that I have to go with shorties one from a Mustang the other from a Galaxy. I'm thinking that I'll just go stock until I can do the stang tank conversion.

well, i don't have power steering. it's fine if either of the steering boxes are taller, but is the saginaw wider than the manual steering box? If so then i think i'll need a different set of headers. i need a tight bend right off the flange to clear the steering box. it's hard to judge the headers when i'm looking at them on the computer. it'll probably work, if not i'll take the shot to the ***** and swallow the restocking fee.

Are your headers listed to work on a 73-79 Ford truck?

The tank sits right where the manufacturer expects the exhaust to go. In-cab tank and rear mounted tanks are in the clear, as well as aftermarket ones outside the frame rails.

I suggest you see the headers in HioSilver's build thread.

Oh. I get it. Yeah this is a street strip deal, where we're going, we don't need tailpipes. All I care about is if the headers will go on the engine, clear the steering box and clear the tranny. I ditched both gas tanks. Got a fuel cell now. I'm thinking I might modify those Heddman husslers now. It won't be hard.

I know you said didn't want to spend $500, but a buddy of mine with a 68 built a very nice 532 over the winter out of a junkyard 460. He ordered a set of headers and first had to hammer the crap out of them and the frame rails to get them in. His big problem was that he had lowered the truck and the headers had about an inch of ground clearance so even though he got them in the wouldn't work.

He ordered a set from Mad Dog in Michigan that exit above the frame rails that went in with very little drama.
