I need to replace the o2 sensor on my truck. A previous owner installed a universal o2 sensor and did not reuse the original plug but hard wired it to the harness. Also, further up the harness it was hitting the exhaust manifold and melted the wiring at that point.
I recently changed the exhaust system after the flange and will install the new o2 sensor in the new two into one adapter pipe. My question is this: I want to install a new plug on the harness but will have to replace about 4-5 feet of the original harness, can I use regular automotive wire to do this? I know from what I have read and also viewed on a Bosch video that you can't solder the wires.
Yes you can use regular automotive wire for this. On these trucks the O2 harness connects to the main harness up near the battery, so there is a small 8ft section with connectors on both ends that is loomed in with the main battery ground wire and then winds it's way down around the inner fender to the sensor location. I have salvaged this section from a junkyard truck before.. it's pretty easy if the engine has been removed but not impossible with it still there. If you were to do this you would get the connectors you need obviously but it's also possible the wire would be long enough to reach your non-standard sensor location.
