Is there a key dance that can pull the code on the dash or is a code reader needed?
I have a code reader but nothing shows up. All systems check out as OK.
I've been told to "clean the sensor" which I assumed meant the electrical contacts to the male/female plugs of the connector up under the front wheel wells... which I did... to no avail.
Could be the sensor... a magnetic detector... is bad. Perhaps open circuit??
Will see if anyone else replies before I test further.
You will have ABS issues if the 2 sensors in the front are damaged in any way. They must not be bent and point straight out, I know this as my son bent one trying to replace a bad stud by spinning the rotor with the stud loose in the hole. I was able to bend it back straight.
If the ABS light does not turn off after start up you have an issue with the ABS controller. Short/fuse or blown electronics.
Warren if you have a rear center differential ABS speed sensor that might be the part referred to when advised "clean the sensor".
That thing looks like this:
When my own tripped that code I simply replaced it, too many miles on it IMHO. The MIL for the ABS system disappeared without my doing so with the scanner.
Also depending on your scanner it might not automatically read ABS codes, have to prompt the start up menu to access those codes.
97 E150 conversion; my ABS light would randomly come on after driving an hour or two. It would reset if I stop/started the engine. I was also teaching my son to drive around this time and was surprised that the ABS system didn't function correctly during some stop-short practice (front wheels locked up). After six months or so, the ABS light stayed on continuously.
Later when I replaced ball joints and needed to remove the ABS wheel sensors, I found that one was rusted in place. I beat it out with a punch. The new one didn't fit in the hole until I cleaned up the hole with a Dremal tool (very rusty).
With the new sensor, the ABS light is off and the ABS system works fine.
