fuel pressure issue

So I just got my new fuel pressure gauge today to replace the faulty one I had. I put it in go for a drive and notice it's at 52 psi. Before the gauge took a crap the other one said 72 at idle.I just thought well the other one broke maybe it wasn't right to begin with. Well cruising down the road it holds at 52 and at wot drops to 0000!!! I just did the hutch and harpoon a few weeks ago all was great until now. I figured the inline filter was clogged so I changed it on the side of the road.... No difference same issue. The primary filter under the hood is less than 3 weeks old. I'm starting to point to the fuel pump any ideas.

000 PSI means the engine will stall. If the truck isn't completely falling on it's face and barely limping along at WOT and 000 psi, your problem is not the fuel pressure but the set up trying to read the fuel pressure.

Gauge, wires, sending unit, etc.

Nope truck is falling on it's face. It maintains 52 psi at crusing speed and idle. As soon as I want to get up and go pressure drops and the truck falls on it's face.

If your fuel bowl is drained, and the filter is removed then it should take 11-12 seconds to fill the bowl up to the threads for the cap. If your's takes much longer then you may have a restriction. You can test by sticking a hose in a 5 gallon jug of diesel and plumbing it to the inlet of the pump. Prime the system and then try again. It the bowl fills in 11-12 seconds then you have a restriction pre-pump. If it takes the same amount of time as before then your pump may be weak or there is a restriction in the post pump lines.

Drain the bowl before re-installing your filter element.

Good luck.

here's a inexpensive way to go while trying to figure things out, then throw it on the shelf for a back up later. i've read good and bad about it, depends on who you ask i guess.

Sounds like a volume issue, are you sure you don't have a kink in a line somewhere?

Mine is doing damn near the same thing, John. I just don't get all the way down to 000. After I did the FRx and Hutch, my fuel PSI was at 62. Now it is at 52-54 one month later. NO kinks in the lines here. I checked the spring on the Frx and the fuel filter is brand new. I bypassed the Baldwin 1212, and that wasn't it. I am thinking my fuel pump is done, too. Gonna order the one listed above on Ebay. Only five left...

There is another thread where the member replaced his fuel pump today and fixed a similar issue. His truck is a 2001 as well.

Edit: it was DavidPostman

Now that's interesting. I have no kinks either and I double checked all my fuel lines connecting to the tank. Everything there is good too. My pump does kind of sound funny. Like it's not under any kind of load.
I called a couple of my local autoparts stores and they don't carry oe pumps. One thing I've learned over the years is spend a lot of money and go with the best of the best or stay oe. I can't spend a lot of money now so I'll go oe. Clay is out of them. I forgot about having to work this morning so I took my wife's jeep instead of the truck. I'll look at it when I get home and see what happens. Thanks guys.

Try sending a pm to Scott79 he had the Bosch pumps for aprox $115 shipped when I was looking for my new pump. I'm not sure if he still has more but it is worth a try.

I'll be sending him a pm in a few thanks for letting me know about that. I should be able to drive it like this for a few days right? I drove 70 miles yesterday after I knotice the problem. I've had a streak of bad luck with cars lately. My jetta tensioner crapped out on me blew a head gasket and cracked the head in 3 of 4 cylinders.... That's why I've been driving the truckllately. The only vehicle that I have anymore that has never once let me down (knock on wood) is my wife's grand Cherokee... Go figure..... A mopar.....

I'd usually say "give it hell" but in this situation I'd be more apt to say take it easy... Low fuel pressure is hell on the sticks... Or Atleast it sounds like it is.

I had a Cherokee with the 4.0 straight 6. That thing would run like a scalded dog, when it was running right. Most of the time it would spit and pop and sputter and lose power, then kick back up and buck and kick and pop. Put a couple grand in parts and diagnostics and never did figure out the issue. I ended up trading it off for a 7mm.08 H&R Handy Rifle. Best trade I ever made.
