Has anyone replaced their stock navigation head unit? If so did you use a wiring harness? Im looking to do this, but the harness I purchased is not the right one...any direction from someone that has tackled this is appreciated!!
By not the right one do you mean they gave you the wrong part and you're looking to modify it, or they gave you the "right part" but it's not matching the vehicle harness?
By not the right one, I mean, It says if fits the my 2004 w/Nav unit and the Amp out, but it does not. I have had the worst time finding a harness for this odd unit...to date with no luck. They are a dime a dozen if I had the regular radio with the Amp out, CD Changer and DVD unit, but Im getting no love on this Nav unit.
Im now to the point Im going to use the, I assume its right, pin-out diagram I found to trace each wire and do a "custom" job. By "custom" I mean a lot of butt-splices and black tape. Actually Ill probably use butt-connectors for a semi-decent job
My preference is soldering with shrink tubing over it. I've seen butt-splice connections loosen up over time.
Yea, that would be best, however I was thinking of using the connectors so I could remove them if needed...I could solder the connectors. My mind hurts as to the time it would take, but I want it done as clean as possible.
Well, my wife is out of town and my son was asleep, so I had to go with what I had...not to happy with typical butt-connectors, like most, so I just went ahead and soldered everything.
Whoa...6 hours of testing, double checking, soldering, more testing, more double checking, wire running, a little more testing, and a little more soldering...The elusive 2004 navigation unit is gone! I swear Ive yet to run across such a niche unit.
So, I have the factory sub and DVD player in tact. The rear DVD will play on its own into the Ford headphones or the system is linked by playing a DVD in the front and providing a video feed to the Aux-in on the factory DVD unit. The amp is operational, however I believe that the old Nav unit provided a built in low-pass filter rather than the amp, so I will be getting a simple low-pass in-line crossover to mend that. Typically that is built into the amp your running a line-out to. Ill just go with a cheap one since the amp and sub is not that impressive anyways.
Feel free to contact me if you too have been wondering about the wiring for the Navigation specific 2nd Gen's.
