That's really bizarre. That means you weren't getting anything out of that battery.

Yea thats what i thought, The only thing the PO has hooked up was a switched 12v wire to start the truck (push button start). Im going to get it hooked back up before driving it. Is 4 gauge big enough or should you use 2 gauge?

I can't find anything definitive, but from what I'm reading 2 gauge is recommended, if you can afford it. It's not really possible to oversize.

battery ground should go to the block from both batteries.
but you should also have a ground strap from the block to the body, and also one from the block to frame, or body to frame.
