92 f150 knocks when first started up for 5 seconds
my old man's truck is a 92 flareside with a 300 i-6, its got just about 200k miles on it, its been starting to knock, when first started up for about 5 seconds then it clears up, it doesnt knock anymore after that, i know we got the right weight of oil in it for this season, the oil pump screen is not clogged up. im thinking the oil pump could be going bad.
could this be the oil pump?
or
is this a sign that the motor is due for a rebuild?

I wouldn't rebuild it yet, I would keep running it until it kept knocking all the time, or started using a lot of oil. It might go another 100 thousand miles this way. I don't know what kind of oil filter you have, but there is supposed to be a check valve in it to keep all the oil from draining back to the pan. My truck knocks a little the first time I start it up after an oil change. I've got 125 thousand on my 84' model. I need to make Old Red last until I'm done paying child support and alimoney, even then, I might just keep fixing it. I'd like to replace the rusted out body parts some day and get it painted.
I guess it depends on how fussy you are and how much money you want to spend....

You'll be surprised. After reading that, I switched to Fram Tough Guard TG8A (the gray diamond plate looking can), a couple more dolars, but no knocking at startup. Probably becuase not as much oil drains back into the pan. I think I'll try a motorcraft for the next oil change. Ford has a revised oil filter insert that contains a spring and check ball that keeps all the oil in the oil filter which eliminates the start up knocking noise ... Ford Part Number E4TZ 6890 A . But at $80, I'll wait a while.
