Really considering trading my 2010 Chevy Malibu+my unfinished 2000 v10 excursion for this 2000 7.3L diesel X. A lot of bells and whitles I like like remote start+rhino lined.
KBB tells me my excursion is worth 9-10 and my Malibu is worth 11-12. Totaling 20k roughly. His asking price was 22k or trade and he likes the trade so far. But KBB had his value at 10k which is odd to me. Does KBB not know the true value of a 7.3?
My v-10 gets roughly 7-9 mpg and malibu only 20 mpg. Would I be better off with a 7.3 that gets roughly 20-23 mpg?
I might be taking too much of a hit with the trade as I'd have to drive the Malibu 1,100 miles away and then drive his excursion back. My EX is on roll arounds so it'd have to be shipped as well
If you have the money to make this trade you have the money to pay for gas. I'm here to tell you that I am not driving a gas Excursion because I can't afford a diesel. It's because the price differential doesn't make sense. I just sold a 2001 for $6500 with lower miles in better condition than the one you are looking at. What is it about the 7.3 that makes it worth a $14k premium?
This guy isn't going anywhere - he's turned down 12 offers already and he's asking twice blue book for a car with 200k miles on it. If he's taking an offer from you it's because you're giving away the farm.
His Ex is worth half what he's asking, and yours doesn't even drive. I hope you're paying cash for all this stuff and not financing a mess! Didn't you already blow a ton of money on your car? I mean this with the best of intentions. You're at a time in your life where you can take some extra income and really do something with it. You've got 40-50 years before retirement, and almost any investment will pay off handsomely in that time. IMHO, your priorities are all screwed up. Cars are fun, but if they are consuming all of your life or your expendable income you really need to look at your priorities.

thanks for the reality check man. Sometimes thats all us youngins need lol.
I'm sure I will be happy with the v-10 once I get her up and running. I'd probably look into this trade moreso if he were in my area but him being 1,000 miles away makes it quite the pipe dream.
How much do lifted excursions with 7.3s usually go for for 150-175k?
I really don't watch the market for used lifted stuff, not interested in it all myself. You're looking at a $10-12k vehicle plus the cost of the lift. I passed on a nice 7.3 a year ago that had 110k miles on it for $15k. For much less than that I bought a 2003 with 60k miles on it in like new condition. It's got the V10, but so what??
In my experience gas is really never the highest cost of ownership on a truck.
I got my EX earlier this year and paid $12000 for it. It is a 2002 4X4 Limited Ultimate with the 7.3. It had 216,000 miles. Here is the problem, with these trucks though: The stuff around the motor will wear out. The motor runs great, but I have put $8000 into repairs since I got it. Granted, all will not have the problems that mine has had, but stuff will wear out on any vehicle with that high of mileage. Here is my list so far:

Right, and there is a TON of stuff left to break. IMHO, the diesel isn't worth the price difference that it commands on the used car market. The v10 is a good (if thirsty) engine in an excursion.
I've always gone with (and most dealers I think feel this way) that just because it's modified doesn't make it BETTER or WORTH MORE. No matter what this guy has done to it, it's still an almost 14 year old vehicle with almost 200K miles on it.
Unless it's got a new motor, new tranny, new axles and a new suspension with a perfect body - there is no way that trade is worth it.

This is what I keep telling people about Excursions.... spend a few more dollars up front, get a low mileage Excursion (diesel or V10), and you're money ahead. After you pay $12,000 for a high mileage Excursion, you can't simply junk it, you have to keep making repairs month after month. You've got $20,000 in an Excursion now.... you will never get your money back on it. And something on it will keep breaking even after this now $20,000 investment. You're way too much into it now to even think about junking it and sucking it up as a bad investment.
They seller is on drugs and doesn't really want to sell his rig, but on the off-chance he finds some fool with more money than brains, who doesn't know enough about these rigs that will be sucker enough to pay what he's asking, he'll sell it to him.
Also, he's flat out LYING about the MPG's he's getting.
