I am running the stock cast iron intake.

The combination driving mileage is around 10 - 11 mpg constant. This 460 is a bit better on gas than the 400 2bbl it replaced.

I also run the cast iron intake, Im looking for an alum. dual plane intake like a performer or some such thing. If anyone in the NW has one for sale I would be glad to hear about it.
Maybe the alum. intake can help offset the weight of the 8K warn upright.

I believe a 400 in a heavier truck would be less economical than a 460 because it will work a bit harder to do the same job. The 460 seems very relaxed even when called upon to pull.

I believe that this 460 in my truck has a bigger than stock cam, perhaps an RV cam, its all setup for 5th wheel from the DSPO, I believe the milage Im getting is about as good as its going to get with the extra weight, save for the correct size carburator maybe getting me another 1 mpg.

86 F250 4x4 460 4speed.

I agree about the 460 making more power with less effort. This 460 will do with a little throttle what took a lot of throttle to do with the 400.

When I drove my Dad's '76 E-250 (460/C6) from Washington down to the San Francisco area I got 10.6 mpg at a steady 58 mph indicated for the 800 mile trip. I later tore down the top end and discovered that it had an Edelbrock Streetmaster intake with a 500 CFM Carter AFB. I wouldn't tow with this combo, but it'd be hard to beat for fuel economy.

Stock motor craft carb (Been rebuilt don't know if the jets were changed) Best MPG has been 15. (Yes 15 MPG. at 50 to 55 MPH on flat terraine)

Around town with my foot to the floor I drop to around 9MPG. Pulls hard from zero to 5500 RPM running 235/75R16 with 5.13 gears. 4spd.

Thinking of going to edelbroke 750 and a extreme cam and 3.55 gears. ported and polished, staight up timing( I hope I can break loose the the tires if needed with the upgrade and I can still get the MPG)

Dang, My 82 will burn the 9.50 x 16.5's to the ground if you would let it.

Stock 3.54 gears, C-6, stock, rebuilt 79 engine.

Superdave,

What rod and jet sizes are you running with your Edelbrock 1411? Did you experience any low RPM (1000-1500 high vacuum) surging? I have a 1983 E350 4x4 van with 460, C6, 4.10 gears, MSD 6A and Blaster Coil, initial timing at 12 BTDC etc. and experienced low RPM surging with the stock setup and have ended up at .113 jets and 063 x 037 rods. 9.4 MPG, surging is gone and the plugs are clean and a very noticable increase in power and performance. My original milage with the factory Holly 4180 was 10 MPG.

Just want a sanity check.

Thanks

Jim

I kept the stock 110 jets on the primaries and went one step up on the cruise and power mode using the 73x42 metering rods.

I changed the step up springs to the stiffest ones. They are silver. Edelbrock told me to run them since my engine makes high vacuum at idle.

I switched the secondary jets from the 107's to 110's.

Well guys, I feel a little out of place, I have a 97 F-350 4x4 w/auto and a 460, 3:55's and 33x12.50X16.5 tires. I can spin 'em pretty good. I found out that if advance the timing about 8-10 degrees, it runs really well, but I have to run premium or I get spark knock when cruisin' in o.d. at low rpm. Like 1600rpm.I found out what was easiest for me was that I marked the distributor and the block with a sharpie and move it the width of the sharpie mark. It works fine for me, but then again, I only run it like that about once or twice a month for a weekend only. With every thing set to factory, I get 12 mpg around town drivin'.
