Hello all, my Dads 1988 Ford F150 steering box is leaking Piece of junk... it only has 400,000 miles on it! Anyway, should I send it somewhere or buy a remanufactured one? Anyone have any recommendations? It doesn't look like a fun job so I don't want to have to do it again.... It's not pouring out, but I do leave a spot everywhere I park. I'm sure it is the box, as I have replaced all the hoses and the pump. Thanks in advance
you can suck as much fluid out of the pump that you can, and replace with lucas power steering fix. ive done this to more than one box with success. it also smooths out the overall operation considering the crusty fluid in most vehicles remains in there for the entirety of the vehicles life.
not a guarantee, but for 10 bucks and 10 minutes, certainly worth the shot on an old rig. i also wouldn't suggest it if i didn't tout it myself, as i have had nothing but success with dripping boxes this way.
i wouldn't get a reman. i'd get a factory unit from the jy long before i got one of those (never an advance, autozone or other chinapart dealers), yours lasted 400k with no problems for a reason.
great rebuild thread encho. . .that's also a viable route.
The sector shaft seal started leaking on mine with less than 100K. Replacing it wasn't too bad after getting the pitman arm off. Cheap too; less than $10 for the part and a free pitman arm puller loaner from O'Reillys. No more leak.
