tensioner pulley

I have a 2001 explorer with a 5.0 and I found that the serpentine tensioner pulley had seized. I managed to get the pulley off and noticed that the bearings fell out and there were a couple metal shavings. Any opinions on whether the entire alternator bracket needs to be replaced since the pulley appears to mount to it or will it be ok to install a new pulley?

I don't know...but on a Cheby...you can buy just the bearing in the center of the pulley (did you look to see if it is removable) and at times, you can buy the pulley and the bearing together.

Look at the bearing, in the rubber, there will be a part number. Often, at Napa, that will get you the bearing.

IOW, the pulley is a wheel w/a bolt going through it, and you can buy the wheel.

The parts stores and dealers won't sell you just the bearing they want you to buy the wheel or complete tensioner assembly, but the bearing is a common size and not that hard to replace even with basic tools, have done this myself on several trucks.

I'd just change the whole assembly and get a new spring and bearing. They don't cost that much.

To all: Thanks for the advice! I ended up removing the alternator bracket and found that the pulley had seized with the bearing race becoming one with the mount! I thought that I might need a new bracket but I was able to remove the race and I ended up installing a new pulley. Since I had everything else off, I decided to install a new tensioner as I figured it would be likely to go soon. Good insurance, I think, since all the hard work was already done. I also replaced the S-belt. Truck is running fine now!

Anyone contemplating such a repair: Remove the air box and intake--it will make your life much easier. The box is attached with rubber bushings only-no nuts/bolts/screws--it just pulls out. Also, the bracket has one bolt under the heater hose so you have to remove at least one end of the hose to access it. By the way, it was MUCH easier to remove the whole bracket than just the pulley as the access to the pulley is compromised by the fan shroud.
