Question Idler Bearing?

Ok so i was at Kregan auto parts today to get a new belt for my 96 f150 4.9. He told me that it would also be a good idea to replace the Idler bearing. I guess I should of asked him this question but i had to run. So just what is an idler bearing and how hard is it to replace?

Welcome to FTE

My guess is he meant idler pulley......They do sometimes go bad. I'd guess he's working on commission too...............it's called "upgrade selling" and sometimes is VERY good......can remind you to get the dielectric grease for your plugs on a tune-up.....or the disc brake lube to keep them from squealing....little things we forget.

If the pulley isn't loud and/or bound up......Thank him and keep your money for something else....although it is not a bad thing to do.....it's just extra work if you don't need it.......in my opinion anyway

Good Luck

if you did not buy a goodyear gatorback belt than take it back and get one.

if no noise than you do not need new pulley.

He didn't neccessarily mean the whole pulley. If you are motivated enough you can buy JUST the bearing and press it into your current idler pulley. But buying the whole pulley is so cheap that it just doesn't seem worth it to buy the bearing and press it in.

Remove your belt and spin your idler pulley by hand. If I remember correctly it should be near your alternator, and there will be nothing benefitting from it spinning (as opposed to the alternator or water pump pulley, for example), it is simply there to assure that the belt gets routed correctly. If it spins pretty freely with no binding or gritty feeling then it should be good to go. If it does feel as though it needs to be replaced, its a very easy replacement. Just get a wrench on the nut on the end of it and it'll pop right off. Throw the new one on and you're ready to go.
