Has anyone ever done a search for brakes on Excursions or SD trucks? My goodness... there is no agreement by anyone. Too many from my perspective just go all out and spend their way to the "best". I'm leaning towards the camp of "Motorcraft Severe Duty" pads. Here's what I don't know yet;
Slots no slots
holes no holes
vents no vents
cut don't cut
OEM or aftermarket
Have we or anyone one else ever reached a consensus on brakes?
Whatever you can afford is best for you. Any NEW brakes will perform well and give you the feeling that you picked the best choice.
There is honestly no reason to have slotted, drilled, notched, mooned, or colored rotors.
With pads there is a bit of difference between them all.
The difference is basically how much they will eat the rotors.
Cheap/soft pads will not eat rotors but will wear faster.
The more expensive and harder the pads you get the more they will eat rotors. You can get ceramic pads that will stop great and last a long time BUT the next time you have to do brakes you will be replacing the rotors again.
Personally I go with the cheapest or just a step up off the cheapest pads. I will normally get in at least one more brake job without replacing the rotors using the softer pads.
Well I tow with my excursion 5 days a week 1500-2500 miles a week(I drive a lot). I removed the brakes on my 7000lb enclosed trailer cause the brakes kept breaking and falling apart. With oem pads in the mountains it was very difficult to stop the truck and trailer. With ebc green stuff pads and napa rotors it stops just as good as when the trailer brakes worked. Have around 30,000 miles on the ebc pads. They still have plenty of like left.
I've always used Wagner pads and rotors on my Excursion and it stops way better than it did stock. The pads and rotors have excellent wear and awesome stopping power. I had Performance Friction pads once, just once and hated them, I went crawling back to Wagner and had the stopping power and cleaner rims I had before.
You can get both from Oreilly auto with a lifetime warranty, so if either fails, you just have to make a trip an you're good to go again.
I've always stuck to factory brakes and never really had any major complaints, initially I was warping rotors like crazy when I was pulling my 28' trailer. But recently I haven't had any issues. I do travel allot on the highway about ninety percent of my driving is highway and rush hour traffic can be brutal on brakes.
I've just recently ordered a set of power stop cad plated slotted and cross drilled rotors with their Z36 ceramic pads. I'm going to give them a shot only because I want to get better breaking performance. Plus the price on them from Rock Auto was way to good to turn down. I only wished I knew of their kits before I replaced my rear calipers. I paid the Ford dealer over eight hundred in parts and labor to replaced one caliper and one rotor and rear pads.
This is what I got from Rock Auto for $335 + shipping.
It's a few hundred bucks more but if you need new rotors this seems like a pretty good deal for including rebuilt calipers.
All in all no complaints this far the truck seems to stop better no noise either which I was afraid of with the ceramic and the brakes don't feel spongey when you hammer on them. Plus for the money don't seem like a bad deal. I'll wait until I have a few thousand miles on them but this far seem ok.
One of the first things I did to the X after buying her was a full brake job.
I wanted rotors that wouldn't warp too easy but I was willing to sacrifice the pads to keep my rotors in shape.
Powerstop cross drilled and slotted rotors
Advance auto parts pads ( i think middle or high end )
I tow around 4-5k lbs every once in a while but I've done up to 10k without any issues. Have about 10-15k miles on the brakes and everything is still perfect!
Havent towed more than a seadoo yet, however i read about the HAWK LTS pads and powerslot cryo treated rotors and went that route in front and HAWK LTS pads in rear with orielly rotors in rear. It stops good for what I need.
I went with OEM Summit racing rotors with the green Hawk pads for the front and HUGE difference. The rears need to be done bad and I'm kind of broke at the moment so I went with some drilled slotted rotors that were cheaper than OEM (Just to try, no flaming please) and the middle grade lifetime warranty SD pads from Autozone. I have yet to put them on though, I should do that today really...
