just purchased the 98 ford explorer xlt. with 112k miles.
i would appreciate comments on what brand and wt. of oil to use and what brand of oil filter.
i would use 5w30. thats the best all around oil. as for brand i use quaker state or pennzoil. basically anything but the store brand. places like wal mart are starting to sell 5 qt jugs for about 6 bucks. fram oil filters always did the job for me. hope this helps and good luck with ur new ford truck. -Jesse
i would stay away from fram filters i would stick with the motocraft filters wall mart has em for like 3 bucks if you want to go synthetic go mobil1 if not get a good quality 5w-30
Walmart has a deal on 5qt jugs of pennzoil for 6.88
Its the new purebase oil thats a group II.
Its hard to beat the 2.99 motorcraft oil filters either.
But the supertech for 1.99 are decent too.(I use motorcraft)
You dont have a location listed but I would probably go with 5w-30, If you live in texas or somewhere its 95/100 all the time in the summer I would use 10w-30 then

I wouldnt bother, just use quality dino. Pennzoil with purebase, castrol gtx, etc etc. ALOT cheaper.
Also with 112k miles syn might clean up your seals too much and start some leaks.
Try any one of the name brand oils that wal-mart sells. I like the Havoline 5-W30 in my 2002 Explorer. It is now manufactured by ChevronTexaco and states on the bottle that it is a Group II oil. For the meager price of $1.17 per quart you cannot go wrong...
5 quarts Havoline 5W-30 = $5.85
1 Motorcraft FL 820-S filter = $2.97
Changing your oil for less than $10.00...priceless
Does anyone know if the SuperTech filter has the anti-drainback valve the MotorCraft reportedly has? I used Frams on an 1988 Mazda 2.2 L and had loud lifter noise the entire time I used this vehicle.

Why not use Motorcraft, then there will not be any question
about it????
Motorcraft in the 820s is superior because it has a silicon anti drain back valve (the s in the model number)
Not sure about different models. I know they arent ALL silicon.
I have run 5w30 for years, but recently decided to switch to 10w30 which is better, unless the temperatures will be below zero F. As for filters I have used Motorcraft for a couple years, but just bought a Wix and am impressed with the quality of the can. Seems to have a better seam and more threads. BTW, someone recently posted that you can get a longer (bigger) filter than the FL1A. It's number in Wix is 51773. It is about 6.4 inches long vs the standard 4.75.
