I have a 98 EXPEDITION XLT 4.6L, I want to get a used radio from the junkyard mines is shot. Do I have to get the exact radio model# in all or can I just get one from 1997 thru 2001 model. I was told that you have to have the exact same model# of the radio to replace it.
This isnt the most technical response but in my experience, if the front looks the same or similar you are probably good to go... This should increase the number of possible donors so you can be a bit picky.
The one caveat... If you have dvd or steering wheel controls, make sure it comes out of a vehicle with the same setup.
all I have is the radio and the cd changer in the armrest. No dvd,etc..
I think you will be fine as long as you get a radio with the same options, i.e. CD changer. My understanding is most Ford radios are interchangeable (not including the Nav or DVD equipped ones.)
Do you have radio controls on the steering wheel? If not, a replacement should be a really easy find. Even with this sourcing shouldn't be too bad. I believe a radio with steering wheel controls will work in a vehicle without.
Other than this, just make sure it looks similar. It doesn't matter if yours had tape, cd, or just radio. These functions are all contained in the head unit. So for instance if you had only radio you can install a unit with cd and it will work perfectly.
I would look in all ford's, Lincoln's, and mercury's for the best unit. Be sure it comes from a car with all windows so it hasn't been weathered.
Also, if you haven't already, look up how to remove/install on youtube so you don't jack anything up.
