I got an 03 with an early 6-0 with 188k on it. Yesterday I realized I had a definite problem! I noticed it felt a little sluggish and looked in the mirror and literally could not see the white car behind me. From then on any time I was excellerating from 20-35 I noticed I had to really get into the throttle and smoke was rolling out like I was pulling a trailer. I noticed it does it more when the truck is warm (this morning seamed OK but it was only an 8 mile drive at 50-60). The truck has no cel on but I know the bulb works. Everything I have read points towards egr valve and I don't want to spend $200 if a$ 250 delete kit and turbo remount gaskets will solve my problem for ever. I definitely don't want to spend $250 to then need a new ficm or hpop or something. Please way in!
What's the exhaust saying...sweet smell as in coooant...or oily as in oil from the turbo feed line. My turbo blew once and the feed oil to it was rolling in the exhaust. What's your boost reading? What's the DeGas bottle level telling you (coolant loss)?
Its not blue, grey sweet or oily. And it only happens when I am trying to excellerate from 20-40. Degas seams OK. No bubbles or noticeable loss. I don't have a boost gauge or pyro yet.
You need to get the truck code scanned ASAP. If it's EGR you'll be "OK" with a good cleaning probably. If it's an injector leaking then the overfuel could seriously burn a piston.
Do you have any Gauges like scan gauge ,dash boss etc ,like partsman said you can pull the EGR and clean it up with carb cleaner and a Plumbers flux brush, and Ware your safety glasses that stuff burns like
I ordered an xdp egr delete and turbo remount kit. Yesterday I un plugged the egr removed the bolts and attempted several times to wiggle it free. I never got it out so bolted it back up but left it unplugged. Drove about 40 miles with no noticeable issues but I think its still gulping fuel down. Hard to tell if it just so happens to be a fast spot in the gauge or what.
Oh the egr delete is on backorder for 3 weeks. . And I bought a pair of pliers big enough to grip the egr today too.

Look in My Albums to see the flat bars I use, Turn counter clock wise and pry up a little resistance but not torx type pull if so that valve is really sooted up, don't screw up the valve unless you have a new one ready.

Gulping fuel down is probably not just an EGR problem ...... IMO, it would be wise to do more investigating.
Have you checked to see if the VGT actuator connector is fully seated? How about looking at the MAP sensor tube for being plugged? With as much soot as you describe, I would bet the hose is at least partially plugged (probably not a cause of the original problem, but it is a common effect).
As 04badford said - use a small prybar - don't ruin the EGR valve w/ pliers.

Harbor freight has/had a 2-piece prybar set for less than $10. The small one fit well to pry up on the tabs on the egr if you rotated the egr a bit. Do one side then the other popped out after a few minutes.
Some of those codes are from unhooking the valve ,try to reset with the scan gauge , the last one I had was unhooking EGR when I pulled and cleaned it, It took a couple trys before the code was cleared
Thanks Mark, Bizmic has a great point about the MAP connection to Intake that little hole gets clogged, as will the IAT2 senser mucho soot.
