Fuel Mileage

I am sure that most of us didn't buy our trucks for "fuel mileage", however I can say that I am more then impressed with how this diesel performs with all this emissions crap on it. Since owning the truck for a little more then 2 weeks, I have approximately 1400 miles on it, with the vast majority me driving everywhere to get the initial break in completed. I didn't keep track of the mileage during that time because the owners manual says to disregard because it can vary due to the break in period. However, my last tank I hand calculated was 20.3 for the whole tank, which I would say is 50% highway, 50% city. Luckily I reset my trip meter at my last fill up and remembered to look at it when I filled up like 30 minutes ago. I went 453 miles, I still had something like 50 miles till empty on the computer, and I put in 20.8 gallons of diesel at $3.88. That puts my truck at getting 21.7 MPG combined which I am more then happy with, especially moving up from a ford ranger that was getting around 28MPG(Highway). Anyways, I look forward to seeing how this thing tows come December.

On a side note, what kind of MPG are you guys getting? I want to know REAL MPGs, what you got on your last tank of fuel, not what the instant meter says.

What configuration is your truck? (RWD/4wd?, 3.31/3.55 etc.)

I bought mine for mileage over my 08 6.4 DRW that got an average 9.6 mpg.

my 12- F250 (just traded for F350 dually) I was getting hand calculated 15.45 average (rising) over 12,000 miles
here is since the beginning of the year, short bed, small tank. not much towing in here. 3.31 rear gear
we are about to do 2800 miles in the dually, almost all highway.. 1600 empty, 1200 towing 13,000 5th. very interested to see the results.

My configuration is 2013 F350 XLT Crew Cab Short Bed SRW with 3.31 E-Lock differentials. This is all empty of course, not any towing as of yet.

Sdetweil,

Is that a program you used to input all of your data, or did you just make it on a spreadsheet? Also, would you say that is all highway miles, combined or just city?

spreadsheet. I copy down a row, input date, odometer, gals, price, it does the rest.

we live 20 miles from anything useful. a little stop & go, 10-12 miles no stoplights @ 65-70.

the 17.x mpg were drives up to Dallas and back in the same day, so almost all constant speed highway. (RT in one tank) @75-80.

all good advice, and much that I've learned with our eco vehicle (prius and now optima hybrid). but I don't buy a vehicle to baby or hypermile it.

we get better mileage in the dually if we stay below 75.. but sometimes we're gonna drive 75.

You should be, those are good numbers for that configuration.
What gears and is engine/emissions stock?

actually i put an S&B CAI on last month and i noticed a very small jump from about 16-17 to 17-18 plus i take it easy use cruise control A LOT and 90% of my driving is on back country roads going no faster than 65MPH. now when i am pulling one of my trailers its not that. I put 400 miles a week on my truck so i do everything i can to get the best MPG. 355 gears, also i have the nitto dune grapplers and after having the terra grabblers i feel that the dunes are a little more road friendly.

Yeah I am still running the stock michelin all terrain tires on mine. I want to do the EGR & DPF delete because I know I can get way better mileage then that. I did not buy the truck to baby it here, but due to individuals here in Washington State who love to just go 60 I am forced to do 65 or else I am constantly braking and trying to persuade them to go faster.

no one is getting WAY better mileage.. everyone is getting WAY more power..

you are only turning off the DPF burn, which is 1/2 what it was in the 6.4s, plus whatever the SCR reduction provided. so I would guess 1mpg average.

1 in 17 = 6% - reasonable, edge case.
2 in 17 = 12% - anything higher than this will be hard to do. (statistically).

I gained 3+ its not just the deleting that is responsible for the better mpg. You can play with the settings, I get the best with lbf set at 1.

2nd stroke, since you're in Canada, are you using Imperial gallons? If, so your 23.6mpg translates to only 18.8 for us here in the states.
