Improved gas mileage

I just want to let everyone know that I have insulated the air intake system on my truck (the one in my sig) with foil backed pipe insulation. I have obtained a 1 mpg increase in fuel economy. Prior to the change my truck was getting about 17 mpg and on a recent hunting trip/visiting relatives type of trip I did the mod. On the way home (about 750 Kms) I averaged 18.1 mpg. It took about 3 or 4 hours to do as I cleaned the parts and let them dry before applying the self sticking foil insulation. It looks kind of cool too
I suspect the real increase would come with city driving as the air intake system is very long so with the lower forward speed and lower engine revs the intake air has more time to absorb the engine bay temperatures. Time will tell I guess.

I'm going to try and post some pictures once I figure out how.

Sounds like a cheap MPG increase. I believe "Project MPG" did something like that and saw a gain.

I actually think you are the one who gave me the original link in another thread Evan. Thank you if it was you as it is a pretty cheap way to get an increase.
Thank you as well for the information on how to post pics. It's getting late here in Vernon so I'm going to check it out tomorrow.

If you want to cool down the air a bit more, look at getting the I6/460 air box lower intake. It exits the bottom of the air box and wraps around the radiator support to just behind the grill. It will provide much cooler air than the 302/351 intake.

FOUR WHEELER Magazine's Project M.P.G.

im sorry, but this article is completely bogus. nothing on this page validates numbers akin to 343/684. 684!? that's 411/820 lb/ft to the crank of an SD 460 that, with the exception of exhaust upgrades, is virtually stock. even if those are their "calculated" crank numbers (they reference power numbers at the wheels elsewhere in the article), theyre still bogus. . .the thing is stock. . .

I don't want to rain on anyones parade, in fact i'm doing the exact opposite. . .anyone who chases down similar results to that bogus article will have poop raining on their parade. im not surprised that a magazine article would do such a thing . . .

that being said, plastic is already a good insulator, adding another layer of insulation might help, but without removing the coolant line in the TB it is virtually a moot attempt. should you wrap your intake? certainly, its worth the effort.

The stuff I used comes in a roll and has paper one removes to expose the sticky side. It's a grey colour so I don't think it's what you are talking about. I also used aluminum tape to seal all the seams.

I think it's pretty much what I thought it was. I used that stuff as 1 of 3-4 layers if different products when I insulated/soundproofed the cab in my F-350

'89F2urd, perhaps the article was bogus. However I did see a gain in MPG. I don't have any idea what my mileage in town is as I only keep close track when I travel. Otherwise I calculate my mileage every 5 or 6 months so my mileage figures are for overall mileage. I also don't know if I have increased my horsepower or torque as I have only recently changed from the stock 15" tires to 16" tires and I'm still getting used to the difference. I don't see any difference in the performance since I insulated the intake. Maybe there is none or maybe it's too small to notice. I dunno

I wont try and tell you that you didn't see a gain from this, although you should be careful of what you claim the improvements are.

aside from that, have you bypassed your throttle body coolant line? if youre on a serious quest for mileage you can do some free stuff like plug your egr port (leaving everything else related to the egr in tact, just plug the tube), and play with the timing.
