Fuel gauge/ Sender/ Selector/ Switch ???'s

Fuel gauge/ Sender/ Selector/ Switch ???'s
Can anyone explain to me how the fuel tank selector works? Does the wiring from the sender go to the switch or gauge or to the device that shuts fuel off from one tank and opens the other, not sure what its called. Are these electronically controlled? Thanks.
