I'm having a weird problem with my brakes. They're spongy but will stop the truck, though if I leave it in gear as I'm stopping or when stopped the pedal slowly makes its way to the floor. Pads look good, no leakage from calipers or drums (or anywhere else that I can see), but the master cylinder is losing some fluid from the front (small) reservoir....not a lot but I do have to add about a tablespoon roughly once a week. I tried bleeding, but no fluid came out of the bleed valves when opened. Any ideas what the heck is going on?
My guess would be the master cylinder.
Fluid loss could be internal. The front (small) reservoir is for the rear drum brakes. The larger rear reservoir is for the front disc brakes.
As for the no fluid when opening the bleeder valves. Usually you can gravity bleed brakes, but not always. Have someone press the brake pedal down when you open the bleeder valve. Start at the right rear, then left rear, right front, left front.
also alot of times those bleeders get clogged with road grime and such, if you cannot get them cleaned out with a small pick or something, you can take them completely off and slowly drill the crap out, just use caution to not overdrill, I have had to do that on several old Fords
Thanks for the replies! I had a helper to press the pedal when I bled them. I'll check tomorrow morning to see if the valves might be clogged. If that doesn't help, time to check the master cylinder. :/
Ok, so I replaced the bleeder screws (and learned in the process to not trust the guys at Advance that it's the right part ....thanks LMC!) and got that straightened out; figured I might as well replace them since they were probably the originals. There was a ton of crap in the lines but they're clear now, though it didn't help much. I replaced the master cylinder today, and halleluiah!!! I have brakes again!
