Hey treb,
The trusty old Haynes manual says that you should change it every 30,000 miles. More often if you do 4 wheelin. And also you should change it anytime you drive through high water. It's not so much that it goes bad per say. More actually that it collects junk and fine particals from the gears

Two ways to get old oil out.

1. with a suction gun, sticking hose down into diff through the fill hole. You wont get it all this way maybe 85% of it.

2. (best) Remove diff cover, scrape old rtv seal off both diff and cover, and re-apply with new rtv sealant, then fill diff with new stuff.

I agree with superranger man about your options. Make sure you have a lot of rags. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting nasty. The smell from that differential oil takes forever to wash out. Also when you pull the bolts, start at the bottom and work up. Leaving the top three in to hold the cover on. You can loosen them. But don't remove them. Have fun.
