I have a 1966 econoline with a 240. I have a overheating problem which I am assessing as I type. Though when it does get so hot and I stop the motor I notice gas squeezes out of the carb and it's sizzling. Novice but I know that can't be good. Any info on that? A solution would be most appreciated.
Does the van still have the belly pan that funnels air through the radiator?
A fan shroud helps.
You could replace the mechanical fan with a high CFM electric fan. This requires an alternator upgrade as well.
The radiator might be blocked. Early Mustang radiators work with bracket modification. A good radiator guy can upgrade your old radiator with a new/better core.
another item to check is if the exhaust manifold has a damper. these can stick and cause a lot of heat to be sunk into intake manifold. this will cause the fuel to boil in the carb. another symptom would be stalling at idle of a hard hot restart (vapor lock). I put a 7 blade fan on mine from a '76 300, it helps but i should either get a fan clutch (you can really feel it's drag) or better still as EB indicated get an electric fan. but watch the power load. van has a tiny alternator around 55 amps.
